JUDGE OAF
IT IS THE OPINION OF THE COURT...

BE-havior

Interesting masthead, isn't it, citizens? And quite relevant, too, considering the events of the past year.

The way this old jurist sees it, behavior is the actions and words of an individual, whereby that individual's lifestyle, upbringing, and character may be defined.

Need an example? Cast your mind back to the last time you went out to dine at a restaurant. Upon being seated, you notice that the diners at the next table have children with them. Matter of fact, you can't HELP but notice them, since the kids are out of control, hollering and running around. Now, unless you're at Chuckey Cheese, it looks like the kids' bad behavior is about to ruin your evening, doesn't it? Okay, take the same scenario, only this time the children are all quietly seated and enjoying an evening out with their parents. In both cases, it is the parents who are responsible for the upbringing of their children, including the molding of their character that ultimately determines the kids' behavior in public. The parents of the "good" kids will get well-deserved compliments for the behavior of their get, while the other two deserve to be targeted as ground zero for a food fight.

As it is in real life, so it is in the "virtual" life here at the BE-Archive.

A person's behavior determines how well they are received by their peers. Someone who acts boorishly here will either be shunned or, more likely, "flamed". Someone who acts a "gentleman" in word and deed is more apt to be accepted and welcomed as a friend by our citizenry.

Since our Forum is conducted through electronic means rather than face to face, it follows that proper etiquette and good manners are made even more necessary, or the system breaks down into juvenile squabbling and bickering. (It was one particular instance of outrageous behavior in the Forum that caused this former "lurker" to don his judicial robes, and begin dispensing summary justice to the offending parties.) For instance, the most common entry in the Forum is by a citizen wishing to see more of a particular image from the User's Gallery that he or she fancies. The posting usually consists of: "WOW, (insert pic poster's name here) gimme more pics of (insert name of goddess here), post 'em pronto, hubba, hubba, etc.", or something just as lame. No "Please", no "Thank You", just "GIMME NOW!" How do you think the pic poster will react when he sees the above? I'm guessing that the request gets shuffled to the bottom of his in-basket; how 'bout you? Whereas, a "Please" and "Thanks" would be more likely to get the request processed that much sooner, right?

Then there's the "bitching for the heck of it" Forum entry. It usually goes:

"(insert favorite expletive here)! I hear about pics of (my goddess) being posted in the User's Gallery, and some other citizen's postings of (HIS goddess) pushed mine out of the Gallery!"

There are two answers for this citizen. First, ask (nicely!) for the pic to be re-posted. (See above for technique, bub). Second, (gasp!), buy a BE-Archive membership! Nine bucks gets total access to the entirety of the BE-Archive's vast holdings; you will never miss out on your favorite goddess again, and Owner's countenance will smile upon thee. Sound attractive?

Lastly, the Forum has been the unwilling host to what can only be described as a schoolyard squabble over the veracity of "TW's ex-girlfriend". The fuss over the identity of this lovely lady with the "privacy fuzz" where her face should be has generated more heated discussions and name-calling than anything I can remember. And over what, I ask you? If "TW" wants to keep his ex-girlfriend's features to himself, that's his business. If, as has been inferred, the pics are faked, surely some judicious detective work by our own Morpher's Guild should clear that question up. In any case, it is the ruling of this court that the amount of hot air generated over this foolishness violates the BE-Archive's "Clean Air Act", and all parties involved should cease and desist forthwith.

I can only quote my mentor and fellow North Carolinian, Sheriff Andy Taylor. As Justice of the Peace for Mayberry, his decision in the case of "North Carolina v. Briscoe Darling, et al" (2 NC 101, 34-44 inclusive) is a masterpiece of jurisprudence. I find it is an applicable behavior guide for all citizens of the BE-Archive:

"Y'all act like you got some sense!"

Court's adjourned!
