This is a guide to the people, devices, and places appearing, mentioned, or alluded to in Thread-End Blues. It is not an index to first appearances, let alone all appearances, but it does provide a who's who and a what's where to the thread. Characters, devices, and places are listed separately.
Since comparatively few characters are known by both given and surname, arrangement of Characters is by name in natural order. Note too that some Characters appearing in this thread may not be named at all. Such are entered under brief one or two word descriptions if they can be identified as members of a distinctive group, as Unnamed if they can't, or as Extras if they are simple walk-ons of little or no narrative significance. Characters not named or only partially named in this thread whose full names are known from other threads are entered under their full names. Artifacts which act with volition are treated as if they are characters.
Devices and places are entered by name, or by brief description where a name is lacking.
The C:, D:, or P: designators appearing before each entry may be ignored; they were merely to aid the compiler in resorting entries as the number of entries grew, and are retained for like reasons in the event of later revision. --Dabbler.
C: Adama. Author Avatar. Tom Russell hopes to find employment with him. Mentioned.
C: Alvin Russell. Character. Son of Sid Russell and Princess Jasmine of Agrabah, adoptive son of Credensa and Sendula, brother and husband of Cressida, brother of Sensida, and father of Roja and Tom. An ex-lover of Anna Jaeger.
C: Anna Jaeger. Authorless Avatar. Daughter of Zorlond and Kiya Jaeger. An ex- (and in the last instance, current) lover of Alvin, Cressida and Sensida Russell.
C: Apollo. Character. Member of the staff in Backstage Central. Boyfriend of Mirage. Called Mr. Hatch by Dome.
C: Authors. More properly Author Avatars. Anna Jaeger is chided by Kiya for baiting them.
C: Canary, The. Character. Caught by the cat. Mentioned.
C: Cat, The. Character. Caught the canary. Mentioned.
C: Credensa Russell. Character. A busty naked amazon, sister of Sendula and wife of Sid Russell. One of Backstage Central's guards. Adoptive mother of Alvin and Sensida Russell, and mother of Cressida. Exhibits a previously unsuspected talent for juggling in this thread.
C: Cressida Russell (Cressie). Character. Daughter of Sid Russell and Credensa, adoptive daughter of Sendula, sister and wife of Alvin, sister of Sensida, and mother of Roja and Tom. An ex-lover of Anna Jaeger.
C: Dabbler. Author Avatar. Also known as Dab and the Barefoot Author. Noted for always going barefoot. Present at the thread's beginning to assist Sid in Backstage Central and take his medicine for a previous liaison with Anna Jaeger. Was involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread. Soon banished from Central by a spell triggered by Anna.
C: Darla Jean Jaeger. Character. Daughter of Kiya and adoptive daughter (natural granddaughter) of Zorlond. Described by Sid as an attractive young lady, but actually eighteen, she has dual-colored hair like her mother, though the red is a bit deeper and the blonde a bit lighter. While certainly very attractive in face and body, she projects an air of being a wall-flower. She likes art and graduated high school the month before this thread. She has four crystals, each deep blue in color and about an inch across, floating in a slow, close orbit around her head. They constrain her "power," an aura of fertility she cannot control, connected with her menstrual cycle and affecting everyone in her vicinity. Basically, when she is fertile, so is everyone else; her aura is so potent that under her influence no contraception works (in fact, countermeasures tend to result in hyperfertility). Fortunately, there is no lust 'energy' attached to her aura, and it has no affect on anyone not physically of age to reproduce or currently pregnant. The natural extent of Darla's aura is over a mile in radius; under the crystals' containment it is confined to within half a foot of the center of her head. Mysteries unresolved in this thread involve certain sudden "headaches" that appear to be related to her "power," and a seeming ability to sense others' procreative activities.
C: Deja Voodoo. Author Avatar. D.J. Woohoo's other self. Sid's boss. Mentioned.
C: Delia June (D.J.) Woohoo. Character and former Author Avatar. Transgendered duplicate of the Author Avatar Deja Voodoo. Chief Backstage Troubleshooter and head of Security. Wife of Elizabeth Fruitbat and mother of Lesley Wu. Called into the thread by Mirage on Sid's request. Was involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread, in which she reportedly died. (She got better.)
C: Dolly Parton (A.I.). Character. V.R. representation of the original, Suite A.I. and girlfriend of Dabbler. A spell given her and Gidget by Kiya ensures Dabbler's fidelity to them -- most of the time. Reportedly out to kill Dabbler for his near-liaison with Anna Jaeger. Mentioned but not named in this thread.
C: Dome. Character. A dommo from the Jaeger Sphere, transformed into something close to human. Formerly doubled for Zorlond under the influence of a skinsuit. Discovers via a classic allergic reaction that Dommos Don't Like Honey.
C: Dommos. Characters. Herd animals of the Jaeger Sphere, of whom Dome was once one. Mentioned.
C: Donkeyshit. Author Avatar. Mentioned by Sid.
C: Elizabeth Drake Fruitbat (Lizzie). Character. A Backstage Troubleshooter. Wife of D.J. Woohoo and father (gender notwithstanding) of Lesley Wu. Called into the thread by Mirage on Sid's request. Was involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread.
C: F-Cup Fitzgerald. Author Avatar. Mentioned as having had the appearance of involvement with Anna Jaeger during the "Marco Polo" thread, when she was younger and Zorlond more uptight than at present, with (though it is not here stated) temporarily fatal consequences. Was involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread.
C: Gidget Walsh. Character. Transgendered duplicate of the Author Avatar JigSaw, and girlfriend of Dabbler. A spell given her and Dolly by Kiya ensures Dabbler's fidelity to them -- most of the time. Reportedly out to kill Dabbler for his near-liaison with Anna Jaeger. Mentioned but not named in this thread.
C: Heloise. Character. Tom's second sexual partner, a native of Medieval France who "knew her stuff," with whom (according to Cressida) he scandalized half the country. She also gave him a social disease. And yes, quite possibly that Heloise. Mentioned.
C: Hubert Wu. Character. Mad scientist. Son of Lesley Wu and Sensida Russell and brother of Kythera Wu, raised in a past AddVenture thread. The polar opposite of his sister, with whom he is obsessed, he is amoral and utterly driven, a complete bastard (in character, not fact) who concealed his evil character for years while abusing his mother. His condition stems from him being incomplete, with but half a soul, he and his sister having originally been one being, torn apart when its gestation was divided between Lesley and Sensida. Despite his heritage he is normal physically, with no unusual powers. Escaping his home thread, he later became a major AddVenture villain. Beat his grandfather Sid Russell out for the treasurership of the American Mad Scientists' Association three times running back in the eighties and then absconded with all the funds, leaving Sid to pick up the pieces. Neither were aware of their relationship at the time. Sid would cut him out of his will were Hubert in it. Mentioned but does not appear in this thread.
C: Jaeger clan. Author Avatars and Characters. Family headed by Zorlond Jaeger, the Red Magician. Those seen in this thread include Zorlond, his sister/wife Kiya, their daughter Anna, and Darla Jean, who is Zorlond's adoptive daughter (actual granddaughter) and Kiya's daughter.
C: Jim. Character. A big, clumsy, cocksure jock in the thread Anna first knew him; a nerd in most threads. Her first lay, and she, with no experience at all, practically had to teach him how to do "it." Appears in Anna's memory only.
C: Kiya Jaeger. Character. Sorceress, transgendered duplicate or sister of Zorlond; also his wife. Mother of Anna and Darla Jean Jaeger. Like Mirage, she tends to get mini-storm clouds forming over her head when she's jealous.
C: Kythera Wu. Character. Daughter of Lesley Wu and Sensida Russell and sister of Hubert Wu, raised in a past AddVenture thread. The polar opposite of her brother, whom she finds repellent, she is completely good, but passive, without the drive self-interest gives normal people. With her, a sober demeanor denotes cheerfulness. Distant and alienated from everyone else, apparently because she's on a different plane morally, but actually because she's incomplete, with but half a soul, she and her brother having originally been one being, torn apart when its gestation was divided between Lesley and Sensida. Possessed of dragon powers due to her heritage.
C: Lesley Wu. Character. Son (sometimes daughter) of D.J. Woohoo and Elizabeth Fruitbat. Husband of Sensida Russell (whose memory of their marriage has been expunged) and parent of Hubert and Kythera Wu. A suspicious person by nature, who tends to rush in where angels fear to tread.
C: Mirage. Character. Cat-headed, three-breasted sorceress, a member of Sid Russell's household who magicks up supper. Girlfriend of Apollo. Mini-storm clouds form over her head when she's jealous, causing static to build up in her fur. Sid worries that if she accumulates any more she will turn into ball-lightning. The electricity tends to make her fizz when she spits.
C: Monster, A. Character. The result of Mirage and Apollo's first attempt at offspring, since which, until now, they have not assayed the experiment again. Mentioned.
C: Old Wizard, The. Character. Involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread, in which he was behind the plot, according to Lizzie.
C: Roja Russell. Character. Daughter of Alvin and Cressida and sister of Tom. Has a passion for excitement, by which she means adventure and exploration rather than sex, which she considers ordinary recreation. Having been raised in the Middle Ages, she speaks Old French and Middle English as well as current lingo (in which she was carefully schooled by her parents prior to their return to the present). Anti-incest, in practice if not in principle, having tried it with her brother (it was her first sexual experience, and so by definition bad).
C: Russell clan. Characters. Family headed by Sid Russell, Keeper of the Backstage. Those seen in this thread include Sid, his amazon wives Credensa and Sendula, their children Alvin, Cressida and Sensida, Alvin and Cressida's children Roja and Tom, and Sensida's daughter Kythera Wu.
C: Sendula Russell. Character. A busty naked amazon, sister of Credensa and wife of Sid Russell. One of Backstage Central's guards. Adoptive mother of Alvin and Cressida Russell, and mother of Sensida. A decent cook, though she does tend to get disconcerted when her recipes come to life.
C: Sensida Russell (Sensie). Character. Daughter of Sid Russell and Sendula, adoptive daughter of Credensa, sister of Alvin and Cressida, wife of Lesley Wu, and parent of Hubert and Kythera Wu. Due to abuse by her son Hubert, her memory of her marriage and motherhood has been expunged for the sake of her mental health. Always having had a tendency to airheadedness, this treatment has left her a total airhead, in Anna Jaeger's opinion. Nonetheless, as Anna also discovers, she "still has it." An ex- (and current) lover of Anna.
C: Sid Russell. Character. Keeper of the Backstage and D.J.'s boss. Husband of Credensa and Sendula and father of Alvin, Cressida and Sensida. Was involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread.
C: Tom Russell. Character. Son of Alvin and Cressida and brother of Roja. Hopes to find employment with Adama. Having been raised in the Middle Ages, he speaks Old French and Middle English as well as current lingo (in which he was carefully schooled by his parents prior to their return to the present). Anti-incest, in practice if not in principle, having tried it with his sister (it was his first sexual experience, and so by definition bad).
C: Unnamed. Character. Roja's second sexual partner, a native of the Middle Ages. Mentioned.
C: Vamps. Characters. Ghostly creatures, vampiric succubi created by the Old Wizard. According to Lizzie, she and D.J. chased these during the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread, in which they defeated a major plot of the Old Wizard.
C: Whipped Cream. Character. A dessert that comes to life and tries to smother Sendula. Per Sid, "This is what you get when there's too much orgone in the air..." He neutralizes it by stabbing it with Sendula's spear, which causes it to grow breasts.
C: Wu clan. Author Avatars and Characters. Family headed by D.J. Woohoo, chief Backstage Troubleshooter and head of Security. Those seen in this thread include D.J., her wife Elizabeth Fruitbat, their son Lesley Wu, and Lesley's daughter Kythera Wu.
C: Zorlond Jaeger. Author Avatar. Was peripherally involved in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread before he had dived fully into "Wild Oats." Husband (and brother/duplicate) of Kiya Jaeger, father of Anna, and adoptive father (natural grandfather) of Darla Jean.
D: Crystals, Darla's. Devices/artifacts. Four of these, each deep blue in color and about an inch across, float in a slow, close orbit around her head. They constrain her "power," an aura of fertility connected with her menstrual cycle that affects everyone in her vicinity. While in place, they confine it, naturally over a mile in radius, to within half a foot of the center of her head. Once the crystals sense that her fertility has passed, they turn green, and can then be put away until the next time they are needed. The crystals were forged by Zorlond and Kiya and presented to Darla on her 15th birthday after they had tried long and hard to teach her control, and failed.
D: Frange, Twelve-bladed. Device. Dabbler helped Sid disengage it from a pincushion percolator.
D: Freeze-frame. Device. Looks like a small picture frame made of icicles. When thrown, it stops time locally where it strikes. Sid and Lesley each have one.
D: Pincushion percolator. Device. Dabbler helped Sid disengage a twelve-bladed frange from it.
D: Razor, Electric. Device. Sid has a device that looks like this, on which the push of a button can 'port away trash to a "proper waste facility." According to Sid it opens a mini-portal with a direct connection to Donkeyshit's boots.
D: Reel. Device. Looks like a fishing reel, only without a fishing pole. Operated by pointing it and jerking it abruptly upward and back, as if casting a fly in reverse, it can rewind an action by locally reversing time. The process is terminated by lowering the Reel. Lesley has one, but Sid, apparently, does not.
D: Spear, Sendula's. Device/artifact. Due to an early use against a ferret, it causes whatever it stabs to grow breasts.
D: Walkie-talkie. Device. Sid has a device that looks and functions like one of these, though there is undoubtedly more to it.
P: Antipodes, The. The quarter of the Backstage opposite the one containing the Concourse, described by Lizzie as a "lost world."
P: Archipelago, The. Island chain in Lake Lactatis that includes a number of unexplored isles. Roja and Anna plan an expedition there, to start with these isles and finish with Paradise Island.
P: Backstage Central. Focal area of the Backstage's Concourse Sector, run by Sid Russell, Keeper of the Backstage. The Residence, the Lab Area and the Table are located there. Setting of this thread.
P: Backstage Troubleshooters' Office. Located at Hilbert's. Office and home of D.J. and Lizzie. Mentioned but not named.
P: Backstage, The. The level of reality behind the apparent world of the AddVenture, a sort of buffer between it and the true reality, where AddVenture Characters kick back between episodes and Authors (or at least their Avatars) hang their hats. Per Zorlond and Kiya, sex is a fairly large part of its society, but people there also have normal lives like you'd find anywhere else. It holds danger for Characters, but those related to or otherwise under the protection of Authors can expect to be protected from most of that.
P: Badlands, The. The quarter of the Backstage east of the one containing the Concourse, of which just about all is suitable for adventure, according to Lizzie.
P: Deleted Thread Forest, The. An area of the Badlands containing a few lost temples, abandoned or occupied, according to Lizzie.
P: Fence, The. A barrier surrounding Backstage Central to keep out the riff-raff. People 'porting in to Central appear just outside the fence.
P: Green Light Sector. A sector of the Backstage Ring east of the Concourse, reputed to be something of a post-apocalyptic hell-hole according to Anna.
P: Homes, Authors'. Mentioned as the places the visitors to Backstage Central 'port out to at the end of the thread. This would mean the Troubleshooters' Office for the Wus and Zorlond's suite for the Jaegers.
P: Jaeger Sphere, The. Dyson Sphere world created by Zorlond and Kiya Jaeger in another universe to house their multitudinous, incestuous descendants. Major setting of the "Wild Oats" thread. The native style of dress (its perennial latest fashion) is next to nothing.
P: Jungle of Confusion. A sector of the Backstage Ring east of the Concourse, from which, according to Anna, exploring parties regularly set out, and sometimes even come back.
P: Lab area. A location in Backstage Central.
P: Lake Lactatis. Large body of water in the Centerlands north of the Concourse, containing the Archipelago. Mentioned.
P: Marina, The. Presumably that of Hilbert's Hotel. Roja and Anna plot to swipe a sailboat from it to explore the Archipelago.
P: North Wall. Inner Ringwall of the Backstage Ring. The Russells' Residence is built into the section local to Backstage Central.
P: Old Wizard's Bar & Grill. Popular Author hangout at the east end of the Concourse. According to Anna, parts of it are "pretty dungeon-like."
P: Paradise Island. Isle in the Archipelago that doesn't allow men. Inhabited by amazons. Mentioned.
P: Recovery Sector. A sector of the Backstage Ring east of the Concourse, which Sid advises Dome to visit for a screening to find out just what of the local fodder his system will tolerate.
P: Residence, The. Living area in Backstage Central, built into the North Wall. Contains its cooking facilities, among other things. A door connects it with the public area of Central.
P: Sea of Troubles. A sector of the Backstage Ring east of the Concourse, which, according to Anna, has pirates.
P: Table. Eating area in Backstage Central. Scene of much of the action.
P: Zorlond's suite (Suite 2282). Author Avatar residence in the Concourse's upper levels. On Zorlond's own bed in the suite's bedroom, Anna Jaeger reportedly bamboozled Dabbler into nearly making out with her (the "nearly" being part of her scheme). This took place in the "Mystery of the Vamps" thread.
