This is a guide to the people and places appearing, mentioned, or alluded to in Random Sample. It is not an index to first appearances, let alone all appearances, but it does provide a who's who and a what's where to the novel. Characters and places are listed separately.

Since comparatively few characters are known by both given and surname, Arrangment of Characters is by name in natural order. Note too that many Characters appearing in this thread (most of them briefly) are not named at all. These are entered under brief one or two word descriptions if they can be identified as members of a distinctive group, as Unnamed if they can't, or as Extras if they are simple walk-ons of little or no narrative significance. Characters not named or only partially named in this thread whose full names are known from other threads are entered under their full names. Some artifacts which act with volition are treated as if they are characters.

Places are entered by name. Locales appearing in the thread that are also not named are entered under brief descriptions. --Dabbler.

Adama. Author Avatar nearly ensnared by one of the chest-slaves. Deja Voodoo later consulted with him on episodes missing from his documentation of the period without time.

Akane. Character. Manga toon. A victim of the plague of breastlessness later activated as a chest-slave; she targeted Ranma-mite.

Alonzo the Great. Author Avatar. A magician called in to the Recovery Sector to consult on FCF's case.

Alvin Russell. Character. One of the children of Sid Russell, a friend of Anna Jaeger. Mentioned (in company with his siblings) but not named in this thread.

Anata. Character. Anime or manga toon. Servant and security systems expert to the Author Avatar Kestral, and resident of his Author Suite, apparently responsible for maintaining his anti-demon wards.

Anna Jaeger. Author Avatar, daughter of Zorlond and Kiya Jaeger. A victim of the plague of breastlessness and later a chest-slave, she targetted her parents. Neutralized before MarkT's chest-slave collecting expedition, she was not among those gathered into MarkT's suite. Fled after the period of no time, having gotten the Wrong Idea about what passed between her and her parents.

Announcer. Character. Man with a microphone, an employee at the Ample Bosom, master-of-ceremonies of its wet t-shirt contest.

April Paige. Character, presumably a model, epimymous inspiration for the magazine April Paige Three (or perhaps it's just the April issue of a magazine actually known as Paige Three).

Archive. Character. Deja Voodoo's private version of Adama's Index, a carnivorous, immense and entangled jumble of shifting records possessed of a seething hive-mind. D.J. Woohoo threatened it with destruction if if ever revealed to Deja Voodoo what happened between them during the chest-slave assault.

Attendants. Characters. Male Recovery Sector employees who took RandomX to the sector. Possibly identical to those employees elsewhere called orderlies.

Backstage Board of Directors. Author Avatars (mostly). The ruling authority of the Backtage. MarkT is Chairman of the Board, and Dabbler, Zorlond and FCF are on it.

Begnino. Character, one of those too-benign-to-be-true male nurses, one of the four attendant on RandomX. He wore the customary hosptial greens. Later revealed as an angel, with huge bird-wings, shining as if from an inner light, dressed in white, and bearing a flaming sword. As a angelic warrior he wore odds and ends of plate armor, and his sword's metal was the color of flame as if it had been forged from fire itself.

Belize. Character, one of four male nurses attendant on RandomX, covering the morning shift. Dressed in hospital greens. A light-skinned black man with a round, shaven head, one small hoop earring in his left ear, and whimsical smile. Has on the breast pocket of his hospital greens a little black logo sort of like a set of pilot's wings, the kind that a pilot would wear on his uniform. Later revealed as an angel, with huge bird-wings, shining as if from an inner light, dressed in white, and bearing a flaming sword. As an angelic warrior he wore odds and ends of plate armor, and his sword's metal was the color of flame as if it had been forged from fire itself.

Beroun. Character, a male nurse employed at the Recovery Sector hospital, one of the four replacements of Begnino, Belize, Bethesda and Bethlehem, and like them, an angel in disguise.

Berwyn. Character, a male nurse employed at the Recovery Sector hospital, one of the four replacements of Begnino, Belize, Bethesda and Bethlehem, and like them, an angel in disguise.

Bethanien. Character, a male nurse employed at the Recovery Sector hospital, one of the four replacements of Begnino, Belize, Bethesda and Bethlehem, and like them, an angel in disguise.

Bethesda. Character, one of four male nurses attendant on RandomX, covering the night shift. Dressed in hospital greens. Short and small-framed, with a round face, large eyes, and wavy brown hair. Has on the breast pocket of his hospital greens a little black logo sort of like a set of pilot's wings, the kind that a pilot would wear on his uniform. Later revealed as an angel, with huge bird-wings, shining as if from an inner light, dressed in white, and bearing a flaming sword. Bethlehem. Character, one of four male nurses attenant on RandomX, covering the evening shift. Dressed in hospital greens. A thin, tall man (tallest of the four) with a boxy face, pale skin, sandy-brown hair, and a prominent mouth. Has on the breast pocket of his hospital greens a little black logo sort of like a set of pilot's wings, the kind that a pilot would wear on his uniform. Later revealed as an angel with huge bird-wings, shining as if from an inner light, dressed in white, and bearing a flaming sword. As an angelic warrior he wore mithril armor that at first sight looked like just boxer-briefs and an undershirt, and his sword's metal was the color of flame as if it had been forged from fire itself.

Birmingham. Character, a male nurse employed at the Recovery Sector hospital, one of the four replacements of Begnino, Belize, Bethesda and Bethlehem, and like them, an angel in disguise.

Bobo. Character. A clean-up imp collecting word debris left at the end of a previous episodoe.

Bonkers. Author Avatar. Ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Bowler Fucker, The. Author Avatar, naked except for a black bowler hat on his head and another on a thong, cupping his genitals, and a pair of in-line skates.

Budwieser Bullfrogs, The. Characters. Three liquor icons patronizing Joe's Bar.

Burke Rakers. Author Avatar ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Busty Heart. Character, a model F-Cup Fitzgerald almost danced with at Pavilion.

Captain Morgan. Character, a liquor icon frequenting Joe's Bar.

Carrie Fisher. Character. An actress, victim of the plague of breastlessness and later a chest-slave, she targetted Booby Fett.

Chelsea Charms. Character, a model F-Cup Fitzgerald danced with at Pavilion.

Chest-slaves. Blanket term for Characters and Avatars afflicted with the plague of breastlessness by RandomX, or by other models previously afflicted by her, all of whom were later activated as chest-slaves. There were 164 chest-slaves altogether; see individual entries for those named in the narrative. All but one (Anna Jaeger) were gathered into MarkT's suite during the period of no time, and of these all but two (D.J. and Lizzie) seduced MarkT once time was restarted. Of these 161, all but two (Subgirlie and Patti Farinelli) were destroyed attempting to drain the mana of MarkT. All of those destroyed were later resurrected and restored to normal. Called by Anata the glow-tits.

Chesty Morgan. Character, a model F-Cup Fitzgerald danced with at Pavilion.

ChinaWhite. Author Avatar ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Chloe Vevrier. Character, a model killed by Legion in the "Monster's Ball" thread, now resurrected. A victim of the plague of breastlessness. Later one of the chest-slaves; she targeted Grayman.

Christina. Character, a model, gorgeous and well known to the archive who has her own website. An early victim of the plague of breastlessness. Later one of the chest-slaves; she targeted the High Commander.

Chuck. Author Avatar ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Cleopatra. Character, alluded to by RandomX.

Closet prohibitionists. Characters. A phantom menace the Backstage Enquirer blamed the Old Wizard's force field on.

Concerge. Character. Employed at Hilbert's, familiar with F-Cup Fitzgerald.

Conrad Volkov. Author Avatar ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Contestant. Character. Man, very large and 300-pounds in weight, who entered the Ample Bosom's wet t-shirt contest. About a C-cup.

Contestants. Characters. Five women who entered the Ample Bosom's wet t-shirt contest. None were over a D-cup.

Contestants. Characters. Realworld contestants of "Average Joe." On Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day, Joab wore a flicker skinsuit that ran all of them.

Credensa Russell. Character. One of Sid Russell's two amazon wives, appearing in this thread only as a time-stopped statue. First name only cited in this thread.

Cressida Russell. Character. One of Sid Russell's children, a friend of Anna Jaeger. Mentioned (in company with her siblings) but not named in this thread.

Crystal Storm. Character. A model, victim of the plague of breastlessness and later a chest-slave, she targetted Iron Nick.

Cthulhu (duplicates). Characters, fifty man-sized, wetly shambling figures created by RandomX at the Old Wizard's command to combat the four angels. Dressed in Bermuda shorts, floral shirts, and sandals in laughable parodies of Miami Beach tourists by Danni, as sabotage.

Cthulhu (original). An elder god, remembered from the "Marco Polo" thread.

Cycozombie. Author Avatar. Ensnared by chest-slave Karen Price. Mentioned.

Cylons. Characters. Two security personnel Joe Lugubrious calls in against Sam Adams. At first they mistakenly try to eject FCF. When the plague of breastlessness was discovered FCF feared a Cylon would be sicced on him. Possibly although not certainly identical to Adama's two Cylon guards.

D_U_S_K. Character, patron of Joe's Bar, resembling an extremely busty female version of an Agent from the Matrix, right down to the sunglasses, but with a black vest and no coat; her bustline is continually on the verge of popping every button above her waist.

Dabbler (Avatar). Author Avatar, a friend of F-Cup Fitzgerald. Doesn't wear shoes. Later nearly ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Dabbler (Original). Author whom the Author Avatar Dabbler represents, and whose punishment for certain writings the Avatar had to take on.

Danni. Character. The Old Wizard's apprentice and servant, both in his SRU days and at the Bar & Grill. As seen in other threads, she serves him as a mana reservoir, replenishing him when weakened through sexual intercourse. Loyal, to a point, but with her own agenda, her subordination being based on his power. She seeks to augment her own at the expense of his when opportunity permits. Conspired against him with Jennie when he went nuts. Later attempted to play on the early ignorance of the replacement Old Wizard version to advance herself. Also recorded as Dannie.

Death. Character, apparently. Mentioned by Bethanien.

Deja Voodoo. Author Avatar. A jet-skinned sorcerer. Ensnared by chest-slave D.J. Woohoo. Later, in his capacity as a magician, called in to the Recovery Sector to consult on FCF's case.

Delia June (D.J.) Woohoo. Avatar, Backstage Troubleshooter, a black-haired woman in a business dress. One of only two Troubleshooters at the time of RS, she is one of two Prime Troubleshooters among twelve in 2008. A victim of the plague of breastlessness. Later one of the chest-slaves; she targeted Deja Voodoo.

Demon. Character. Something unseen and unholy that gathered near the dying FCF and created a pall of gloom by its influence. Killed by Bethanien.

Demon. Character. Unseen spiritual predator that gathered near the dying FCF. Killed by Birmingham.

Demons. Characters. Ill spirits or spiritual scavengers that rend at the souls of those victimized by infernal magic. Killed, driven away or banished from the dying FCF by Bethanien and Birmingham.

Devon Daniels. Character, model who figures in some of F-Cup Fitzgerald's writing.

A rather minor Author whose work focused mostly on interaction with various busty actresses and models, usually psychologically grandiose sexual wish-fulfillment scenarios. Mostly harmless." JH. Author Avatar. Ensnared by chest-slave Juliette Lewis.

JigSaw. Author Avatar, fascinating to women. A friend of FCF who attempted futilely to fix him up with new girls during his obession with RandomX. Later ensnared by chest-slave Lizzie Fruitbat. Described by Bethanien as a brother Author of Dabbler, who in once sense might be considered an actual brother.

Jim Bean. Character, a liquor icon frequenting Joe's Bar.

Joab. Character. Member of the family of Joe Lugubious and an employee in Joe's Bar. Work a flicker skinsuit on Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day set to run all the contestants from "Average Joe."

Joad. Character. Member of the family of Joe Lugubious and an employee in Joe's Bar. Appeared in the guise of Joe Montana on Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day.

Joe LeGabri (Joe Lugubrious). Character. Proprietor of Joe's Bar. Resembles the actor Joe Turkel, from The Shining and Blade Runner among other movies. Later appeared in the guise of Joe Stalin on Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day. His nephew Joel wore one of Joe. Actual last name not cited in this thread.

Joe Montana. Character. Realworld football star of whom Joad wore a skinsuit on Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day.

Joe Stalin. Character. Realworld dictator and historical figure of whom Joe Lugubrious wore a skinsuit on Wear a Skinsuit to Work Day. Also called "Uncle Joe."

Justine Juggs. Character. Realworld model. A victim of the plague of breastlessness later activated as a chest-slave; she targeted Kestral, whom she succeeded in captivating by becoming a dragon. As a chest-slave she exhibited the power to dematerialize, rematerialize, scry, and physically transform.

Kami. Character. Deity by whom Kestral ana Anata swear.

Karen Price. Character, a Playboy model visiting Patti Farinelli. An early victim of the plague of breastlessness. Later one of the chest-slaves; she targeted Cycozombie.

Katra. Author Avatar ensnared by one of the chest-slaves.

Kender_Sci. Author Avatar. Ensnared by one of the chest-slaves. According to Anata, he wasn't likely to succumb to the chest-slaves' seduction.

Kiya Jaeger. Character, transgendered duplicate and wife of Zorlond Jaeger, ensnared with him by chest-slave Anna Jaeger.

Kythera Jaeger. Character, a future Backstage Troubleshooter staffing Office Time for RandomX's appointment, on February 21, 2008. She is one of twelve Troubleshooters in her timeframe, including the two Prime Troubleshooters; all but the Primes take turns on Office Time duty. Came into being some time after RS. She materializes spectacles when she reads.

L.E. Author Avatar. Anoted recluse. Ensnared by chest-slave Nadine Jansen. Kestral suggested chest-slave Justine Juggs target him after she failed to seduce Kestral.

Lara Flynn Boyle. Character. Realworld model cited by Juliette Lewis as an example of breastlessness.

MarkT (Avatar). Author Avatar, Chairman of the Backstage Board of Directors. Nearly ensnared by chest-slave Patti Farinelli. A low ep Author, he is actually more powerful than any because he started the UBEA by writing the first episode, and hence collects of percentage of mana from every episode subsequently written by any Author. Unlike other Authors, he is strengthened rather than hurt by mana attacks. Drained of mana by RandomX, he was restored by absorption of the mana wall into which he was thrown, together feedback from the chest-slaves's self-destruction as they seduced him. Speaks in a cutting baritone. Also called T, Mister T, and the Great and Powerful T.

MarkT (duplicates). Author Avatars, thirty-one of them, created by the primary version for the mop-up of the chest-slaves.

Mary. Character. Desk nurse in the Recovery Sector, a massive-chested, matronly type well known to sector clients, who know her as Mother Mary -- Ma Mary for short.

Mary Pickford. Character, movie star. A nude image of her is on FCF's enchanted movie projector.

Masseuse. Character. Employed at the Spa, a large beefy woman resembling Rosa Kleb, like all the masseuses there. Mentioned.

Soul-nut, The. Character. The Old Wizard's institutional memory, intended to preserve his sould and resurrect him in the event of personal destruction. In pre-AddVenture times he had it set to possess the first person who encountered it -- usually whichever hero or sorcerer had destroyed him, as he sought to loot the wizard's lair after. Thus he would be reborn in the body of his enemy, with access to all his foe's life experience. That, indeed, is how he acquired so many divergent pasts; he literally is almost everyone who ever succeeded in compassing his death. Thus did he grow from age to age in power and knowledge, ever learning from past defeats. In the AddVenture, with its endless life-branchings, the Old Wizard recast the spell so that only another version of him could trigger it. This was to counter the risks inherant in eating too many other souls; their personalities would tend to come to the fore, at times, an occurance that actually appears to have taken place during the course of the thread.

Dormitory Levels. Concourse Upper Level 19 (or, by another scheme, Floor 29), and one or more levels higher up. Residence levels for low-episode Authors, including at one point RandomX. Level 19 is the only one seen; the other(s) being mentioned. Level 19 resembles an ordinary dormitory, with beds spaced apart all in two rows down the middle of the floor. Here, however, all the beds were king-sized beds. The level was broken up into five smaller rooms, and in the middle of the level were a lounge and a kitchen for the whole floor to use. Mall Level. Basement shopping mall of the Concourse, consisting of a central corridor flanked by long lines of doorway-sized storefronts, impossibly opening onto stores much wider than their frontage that somehow never impinge on their immediate neighbors; classier stores, mostly cluster toward the western end, occasionally have a broader frontage.

Master Switch, The. A device in Backstage Central that can stop and restart time throughout the Backstage, and presumably the whole AddVenture. The downside is it affects the user as well. Only MarkT and certain entities from Outside (including the Old Wizard and the angels covenanted to work in the Recovery Sector) are known to be immune to its effects. North Ringwall, The. Of the Backstage, in the vicinity of the Bar & Grill. The ringwall here is invisible and pierced with unseen archways. After MarkT hit it, the local section of ringwall wasn't just invisible, it was gone.

Northern Staircase. Staircase between the first and second floors of the Bar & Grill, located at the northeast corner of the building. The former version of the Old Wizard died there, and Jennie found his soul-nut there. Also called the northeast staircase and the northeast stairwell.

Office Time. A future version (or possibly annex) of the Backstage Troubleshooters' Office used to retire the backlogged present-day appointment calendar. The Appointments Door of the Troubleshooters' Office is supposed to open directly into Office Time, but sometimes there is a partial delay in teletemportaion, a glitch fixed some years prior to 2008, but later than RS. The databases of the Troubleshooters' Office proper and Office Time are not linked, to avoid the formation of temporal anomalies and paradox whorls. All Office Time gets is the name and point of origin of people with appointments, and even those take some time to make the temporal transition.

Old Wizard's Bar & Grill, The. Popular Author hangout at the east end of the Concourse. Previously unseen features include a jukebox in the main room and more inner rooms, including a ledger room. The inner room immediately behind the bar appears to be the kitchen, as its door is described as the kitchen door. RandomX set fire to "the" stairway leading to the second floor, apparently the one in the Grill, not the one by which the Old Wizard attempted to escape.

Old Wizard's sanctum sanctorum, The. One of the hidden rooms in back of the bar, reached through the kitchen, described as a dark room with a table. Where the Old Wizard has his magical indicators and the small crystal ball containing RandomX's soul.

Recovery Sector, The. A hospital sector somewhere east of the Concourse, near enough to walk to.

Relativity. A sector somewhere west of the Concourse, stated to be a magicless venue. Most Author Avatars are not allowed there, although Anna Jaeger apparently is. Sid Russell's children are also known to be permitted to go there. but they're Characters.

Restaurant Row. A sector to the east of the Concourse opening onto the lakeshore. Known for its various watering holes.

Restoration Booth. A device of Sid's in Backstage Central, used with the aid of RandomX's remaining power to recreate or reconstitute the models and other women who had been turned into chest-slaves and then burst themselves draining MarkT's mana. It took quite a bit of mana to effect, and Random expended nearly the entirety of her stolen horde in the process.

Riviera, The. A recreational sector somewhere east of the Concourse.

Sea of Troubles. Sector somewhere east of the Concourse, mentioned.

Second Basement Level of the Concourse. FCF and RandomX take the elevators down here from her hotel room, A diesel bus is waiting for them, and after she takes a seat it takes off down the tunnel back to Reality.

South Corridor. Hallway on the second floor of the Bar & Grill, reached via the Southern Staircase. MarkT and FCF searched the rooms along it in their pursuit of the Old Wizard.

Southern Staircase. Staircase in the southern portion of the Bar & Grill, the one nearest the Bar. Torched by RandomX as she attempted to burn FCF in his wicker cage, and later taken by MarkT and FCF in their pursuit of the Old Wizard.

Spa, The. An amenity in Hilbert's Hotel.

Spells 'R' Us. Also known as SRU. The Old Wizard's magic shop and primary place of business, sometimes depicted as a (dimensionally) traveling shop and sometimes stationary. His sole base of operations before he got tapped to run the UBEA's Author bar. It has branches in other realities as well as the UBEA. A branch in the Concourse basement, beneath the Bar & Grill, is of the stationary variety.

Store. On the Mall Level, unnamed.

Suite 1505. Patti Farinelli's model suite or apartment on Upper Level 5 (the Playboy level) of the Concourse Upper Levels. Number not cited in this thread, but known from other threads.

Suite 19--. Guest suite occupied by Juliette Lewis in Hilbert's Hotel or the Upper Levels (given FCF's customary conflation of these entities it is difficult to say which). On the theory that Hilbert's proper is reserved for Characters originating inside the AddVenture, the latter is assumed. Presumed to be on Upper Level 9 of the Concourse Upper Levels, which is specifically for guest suites, and is where non-Authorial Avatar RobertaFan resided (in Suite 1960). Possibly both Juliette Lewis and RandomX were put in suites on this level (other evidence supports the latter). Number not cited in this thread.

Suite 19--. Guest room or suite occupied by RandomX in Hilbert's Hotel or the Upper Levels (given FCF's customary conflation of these entities it is difficult to say which). On the theory that Hilbert's proper is reserved for Characters originating inside the AddVenture, the latter is assumed. Stated to be down a hallway from the elevators and "several floors" below FCF's office, which fits well with a location on Upper Level 9 of the Concourse Upper Levels, which is specifically for guest suites, and is where non-Authorial Avatar RobertaFan resided (in Suite 1960). Possibly both RandomX and Juliette Lewis were put in suites on this level. Once it was realized RandomX was an Avatar, she was transferred to Bunk 2911 on Upper Level 19. After the period of no time she was in courtesy again permitted a guest suite, stated to be the same one she had used previously, in which she resided until she left the Backstage. Suite 2000. MarkT's Author Suite and residence on Upper Level 10 of the Concourse Upper Levels, in which he maintains a disturbing number of guest rooms. The chest-slaves were stashed here during the period of no time.

Suite 2001. Suite adjoining MarkT's residence on Upper Level 10 of the Concourse Upper Levels. Contains his private office annex, also characterized as his workplace. Noted as the place he keeps his crystal ball.

Suite 2002. Adama's Author Suite on Upper Level 10 of the Concourse Upper Levels, where chest-slave Vanna White was turned back by Rebecca. Number not cited in this thread, but known from other threads.
