Katie could almost see the wheels turning in Madison's head, as she desperately tried to come up with a plausible reason for not transforming herself as Katie had just done. Katie was pleased to see that Cináed, whom she suspected might be the one pulling Madison's strings on Morkaldor's behalf, was not present to assist her. Katie didn't think that the girl was clever enough or a powerful enough magic user to have fooled the court into accepting her as queen without having continuing help; she surely must have a local ally. The Morkaldorians were surely too distant to do much for their puppet, and Cináed seemed like the most likely suspect.

After a few seconds Madison said: "I have been cursed by Joador and thus cannot use my Kitsune powers."

  1. But she had taken too long, and some of the courtiers could be heard having whispered conversations, evidently having doubts.
  2. But then she did transform. Was she a far more powerful magic user than Katie had thought, to do so without a visible spell, or did she have an ally hidden at the back of the crowd who had transformed her?
  3. Unfortunately for Katie, no one seemed to notice Madison's hesitation.
  4. Just at that moment Cináed bustled in, seemingly slightly out of breath. He must have had to hurry when he realised that something was amiss. Looking at Madison's face, Katie saw a momentary look of relief, before she readopted her usual disdainful expression. "What the Queen says is correct," Cináed said.
  5. "Could you explain how this curse works?" Katie asked, hoping that Madison might dig herself a deeper hole. She was pretty sure that kitsune transformational magic was completely different from human magic and so could not be blocked by it. Unfortunately whether any of the courtiers, not themselves being kitsune, would realise that was doubtful.
  6. Something else.
