"You're lying. Tell me what really happened."

Cynthia searched her mind for a way out of this. Ratting out Jamie might work, but she was honestly starting to like the other girl. Jamie had been nothing if not brave and loyal to her missing friend the entire hour and a half Cynthia had known her. She'd even helped Cynthia, when they both knew she'd done almost nothing to deserve it.

No, there was no way she was going to tell on her.

"I was trying to sneak out. Cynthia hurt herself trying to stop me."

"What? Jamie, do you realize-"

"Hush," the nurse silenced Cynthia with her finger. "Young lady, truancy is a very serious matter. While I'm personally impressed that you helped- your name is Cynthia?" Cynthia nodded. "-that you helped Cynthia get here, the fact remains that she was injured because you were breaking the rules. I'm going to have to take you to see the headmistress."

"I understand. Is it okay if you help Cynthia first?"

The nurse paused, but then conceded to Jamie's request. She treated Cynthia's ankle, while making Jamie sit right next to Cynthia where she could watch her. Then she made Cynthia rest on the bed and hustled Jamie out of the room.

Cynthia thought about trying to follow them, but her ankle still hurt when she tried to get up. The things she'd heard about the headmistress here... she could only hope Jamie would be alright.
