Reluctantly, Sharon slipped on the chain with the jewel in it. “How long will it take to transform?”
“About a minute,” replied the Doctor.
“I can feel something happening!” She held up her hands in front of her eyes: already her fingers were shortening, and the palms of her hands were thickening and lengthening, developing a definite foot-arch. She held up her legs; the same thing was happening to her leg-hands.
As the Doctor promised, after a minute, all four of her hands had turned into feet. She experimentally bunched up the finger-toes on her forefeet, and then tried to spread them apart.
“I can’t quite oppose my thumbs any more,” she commented. She slipped down off the examination table, and experimentally took a few steps in her bare feet. “Well, at least I can walk properly again.” She sat back on the table again, and took the chain off, fumbling clumsily for a bit with her forefeet before she was able to manage it.
Almost immediately she took the chain off, her toes started lengthening, and her feet shortening, thinning and flattening. A minute later, she had four hands again. She flexed her fingers, including the toe-fingers on her leg-hands.
“So I’m right back to how it was when I came in,” she commented. “At least I’m no worse off.”
“You should have brought your shoes,” pointed out Jim. “Now that you can wear them again.”
“You know what? I don’t think I’m going to bother with shoes,” replied Sharon. “I need to get used to this flipping back and forth between hands and feet thing, and it’s probably easier if I don’t have to remember when I can wear shoes and when I can’t.”
