This was a very special curse, completely unlike any other in the valley. Most curses had an effect on the victim alone, and that was that. Not this one. Its influence worked very differently. Its influence did not merely affect the victim themself, but rather, it had an effect upon their entire life. In order to influence a person's life, it is necessary to make alterations to the people within it as well. The sole limiting factor was that it could not maintain the effect at a significant distance. Outside of that distance, all were returned to normal, completely unaware of the change that had just occured. Their minds filled in the blanks as best it could, rationalising events in a manner which made sense to them.

But how exactly was a person affected by this aura? We saw an example of this in the previous page. Shampoo, the mighty warrior woman. Winner of a grand fighting tournament filled with her generation. It was a hard fought victory, as the tribe places great emphasis on strength and skill in battle. Many of them learn a wide variety of devious tricks, be they shiatsu or ki manipulation, or poisons, or any number of dirty tricks. All is fair in love and war. That's the way it goes.

And in a sense it remained that way until Ranma arrived in cursed form. Had Ranma arrived male, then he'd have found himself a girl throwing herself at him, claiming to be his wife by the time he'd left the village. Assuming he left at all. As it was the cursed form that arrived, however... things didn't quite go anything like normal at all. In an instant, the history of the entire tribe was cast aside momentarily. Altered beyond recognition. No longer was this a race of warrior women, proud and strong. It had become a village of warrior whores, who emphasised beauty and sexuality over power, utterly shifting the entire paradigm upon which they had set their lives. And not one of them, as wise and as clever as they all were, noticed the shift. Instead of a fighting tournament Shampoo had entered a stripping contest. When Ranma was dragged out of range, the change flipped back with nobody involved being any the wiser.

One example may be insufficient to demonstrate this point, so instead let's go to the Tendo family. At the moment they were all sat around a table, the three daughters of the family one side and the father on the other. The father has just this moment informed them that one of them is to be engaged and then, presumably at some point down the line, married to one Ranma Saotome. A young man he knew nothing about, save that he was the son of an old friend and training partner of his. This was a day he'd been eagerly awaiting for so very, very long and he could hardly wait to meet Ranma, to introduce him to these three beautiful young girls.

Kasumi Tendo, the consumate housekeeper. At a young age their mother had died, and Kasumi had felt compelled to step into this role since she was the eldest. After a few teething problems, she adapted perfectly. She cooked and cleaned, and looked after her dear little sisters wherever she could manage it. On hearing of the engagement, her first question had been of Ranma's age. Younger men bore her, after all. She wanted to marry someone more mature.

Then there was Nabiki, the middle sister. For her, life was all about the fun she could have at the expense of others. Quite literally, at times. She was a rather thrifty sort. Never spent a single penny when she didn't have to. Nabiki was a creature of snark, teasing others whenever the chance arose. Some saw her as smarter, much smarter than she really was but the truth of the matter was that she was simply ruthless. At the moment, the engagement fascinated her. Thus did she respond rather eagerly at the news, though would change her mind later on when she actually met the man in question.

Finally, Akane. In a word, a contradiction. That's the best way to describe her. A living contradiction. She was unquestionably a tomboy, yet aspired towards being a girl. She excelled in most athletic pursuits -outside the swimming pool - yet was tragically clumsy. She was a kind hearted person that could ill stand by while someone was in need of aid, and yet she had the temper of an ogre and a fist with about as much power behind it. So yes, Akane Tendo. The living contradiction. She was resolutely disinterested in the engagement, believing that she would be able to escape it if she only took the time to think of an escape route.

This could be thought of as their "off" mode. But what will transpire when that crucial moment arrives, and Ranma is dragged in by her father to meet her future bride? It would start off normally enough. Soun and Nabiki dash off towards the front door. Kasumi and then Akane follow along a little less eagerly. But then each of them would be struck by the sensation that something was a little... off. Something had changed, and yet none of them could quite place it. Thus would the family join together at the entrance to their home, staring in shock at the panda and the girl. And they were rather different from the people who had stood up just moments before.
