BSV/BACKSTAGE INTERLUDE

Unending BE - episode 332933

The stage manager threw down the script after reaching the first option, fixing his eyes testily on the script girl. "How?" he demanded. "Someone hasn't done their continuity work, here. Meiou's outside the Antipodes, right? And the Supers are inside. So how the hell can he be in their very midst?"

The script girl shrugged. "Search me, the text is exactly as we received it from the Author."

"I'm more concerned with the typos," the proofreader piped in. "How did it even get to you without passing by me first? My reputation--"

"Is safe," said the script girl dryly. "The Bunny's always been careless about protocol, he just hopped on in and handed it to the first person he saw, who happened to be me. I saw that there were problems over and above the odd inputting error, so I took it straight to SM."

The stage manager shook his head disparagingly. "I just wish the Authors would get their fucking act together," he sighed. "Is there a designated rep on this story? Maybe a rewrite man?"

"I think this one's mostly Dabbler's baby," said the proofreader, somewhat doubtfully.

"I thought her baby was still in the oven," said the script girl.

"I'm sorry, not the then-and-there-Dabbler who's knocked up, but the here-and-now one who's doing the report," the proofreader clarified.

The script girl looked toward the stage manager, who shrugged.

"Worth a try," he said, and picked up the phone. "Operator?" he said. "Oh, Opera, sorry, I didn't know it was your shift. Yes, that's right, Faulkner, you got it. I want you to put me through to the Concourse. Mm? Dabbler's suite if you can get it. There's a doll. Sure, I'll hold." He drummed his fingers against his desk as he waited. "Dabbler? Yes, Faulkner here, glad I caught you, I was afraid you might have checked out to reality for the day. Listen, about this latest 'Backstage Vortex' episode Meiou Bunny brought in -- oh, you haven't seen it? Hold on, let me read it to you. No, script problems. Just listen, all right? I think you'll see the difficulty."

The stage manager proceeded to read the whole of the preceding episode into the phone, then listened, and nodded. "Yes, I thought you'd spot the geographical inconsistencies -- what? You like it? Listen, Dave-- yes, I understand. You will? Thanks, I appreciate that. Okay, then, get back to us when you have the copy, all right?" He placed the phone back in its receiver.

The script girl and proofreader were gazing expectantly at him. "Well?" the former asked.

"Seems that what Meiou wrote is basically what happened, only he skipped over a few things in his account. Dabbler says not to worry, it happens all the time, and he'll send an update for proper insertion."

"When?" the proofreader demanded.

"He says he'll link us over any moment now."

  1. >And the story resumed from the point at which we left it.

  2. Something else.

Dabbler (not bad, Meiou -- wouldn't have messed with it, except that you got the admittedly confusing geography wrong)
