"Mighty Heroes 'so called?'" D.J. asked.
Diana nodded. "They're of the I-5's ilk, only worse," she confirmed.
"And these are the kind guys they set to guard the gates of a place like Threadville?" asked JigSaw, incredulously.
"The inside of Threadville," Diana corrected her. "Sure, why not? It's not as if the sector can't defend itself, you know. They probably couldn't get anyone in their right minds who'd take it on. That, or the I-5 and the Mighty Heroes were considered expendable. The outside guards are of a quite different caliber, you'll notice."
Sindy shuddered. "Well, Law's crew certainly was," she said. "I'm beginning to get the impression," mused Dabbler, "that the Supers posted at these checkpoints are all either bozos or unpopular with their fellows."
"Hmm, that could well be," Diana responded thoughtfully. "Deux ex Machina Man would certainly fit that pattern."
"I thought you said he was popular," said Rincewind.
"To read about, sure. In person, well—let me put it this way. You may have picked up on the fact that we Supers in general don't get along very well."
"Translation," said Mort, "they're always fighting each other."
"Pretty much," Diana admitted. "Well, Deux ex Machina Man always wins, or at least never loses. No matter how bad the odds against him, he always comes out smelling like a rose, somehow, generally by the most unlikely means imaginable."
"I can see how that would stick in your craws," Mort noted dryly.
"In addition, he is infuriatingly literal and impervious to argument."
"Where's the rest of the security people?" Sindy asked.
Diana snorted. "This is Deux ex Machina Man," she said. "He wouldn't need any backup."
