Beside the tram stop were landscaped gardens to either side of the tracks, almost all the way back to the ringwalls, beyond which lay a couple of modest buildings abutting those walls. They should have looked stately and elegant, but the gardens showed evident signs of both fire and vandalism, as did the buildings. Ahead were what appeared to be two lines of massive, solid red buildings flanking the tracks. They too were marked as if by fire. A similar building lay athwart their path, far ahead.
As the tram slowed to a halt, the passengers observed a Super with a stack of papers approached the car from the distant building to the right of the tracks. At least, Sindy assumed it was a Super—in appearance, it was more like a wacky-looking robot.
Dabbler appeared perplexed as well. "Who's that?" she asked Diana, pointing to the newcomer.
She smiled slightly. "I thought you were the resident expert on my kind, Dabbler. That would be the local security officer, no doubt—though it seems he's doubling as help for the Lexicographer as well. He goes by the name of Deux ex Machina Man."
Dabbler's eyes widened. "I've never heard of that one," she exclaimed.
"Probably because he's not from your world's comics, but those of my world. Very popular hero, written and drawn by a certain Sam Simeon. And his doubly-fictional status, from your perspective, didn't impede him from getting dumped here, obviously."
