Christine looked at her with a vacant stare, still exhausted and emotionally taxed from her ordeal.
"Why haven't you…" Mother's words trailed off. She was unsure how to broach the subject in the first place.
Aspa recognized where she was going and held up a hand as she hugged Christine tightly in her coils in a firm but reassuring manner.
"S-s-s-s-sshe will not ….unlessss-s-s-s S-ss-she as-s-ssskssss."
Christine smiled up at her friend and stroked her scaly cheek.
Mother nodded at the exchange. "I've seen this before, " she said. "Tell me, Christine, were you with her … before."
Christine bobbed her head slowly in response.
"I imagined so," then she looked at the group. "You'll fit in quite well here then. You see, we have a strict rule about forcing the symbiosis on anyone around here. It's grounds for expulsion!"
The snakewomen acknowledged the instruction, but several found it hard to ignore their natural instinct to perpetuate the species at any cost.
Julia was still curious. "What are you doing here? What are thessse exxxperinentssss.?"
I'll explain later, for now, let me show you to your quarters.
Then she heard the lock on the cell door turn. Dr. Weschel entered the room. God, did he terrify her. His steely eyes and cold demeanor were too much for her.
"Miss Anderson," he began. Patty was taken aback. He always referred to the security personnel by their rank, 'Officer this', 'Sergeant that'. Then it struck her. She was out of a job.
She began to apologize, beg even, but Weschel stopped her.
"DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOUR INCOMPETENCE HAS COST THIS PROGRAM …. AND ME!"
Patty broke down again. Weschel continued, ignoring her sobs. "WE HAD IT! WE HAD THE CURE. THIS CURSE WAS ABOUT TO END!" His voice trailed off, "and I might have had Mary and Candice back."
Weschel composed himself. "Now this should be the correct formula," Weschel held up a vial. "If our saboteur, the one you should have caught, hasn't tampered with it."
"Of course there's one way to find out." Weschel produced a syringe.
Patty backed away from Weschel as far as she could at he approached with the needle drawn.
