WO: What's in a name? Besides consonants and vowels, I mean...

Unending BE - episode 282770

For convenience's sake, the point of view shifts to the Sphere, where Zorlond and Kiya were adressing what looked like an image on a TV screen, floating in the air. "Oh, right," Dad said. "About that..." Zorlond shifted the baby in his arms to a more comfortable angle. "It's not common on the Sphere... or normal, really... for women to know who fathered their children, so naming is traditionally entirely the mother's domain. Her mate can suggest names, but the choice is hers. I left the naming of this little guy to Sukadika. She decided to name him Zyavt."

"Shaft?" Anna's reaction seemed a bit non-plussed.

"Zyavt. Different spelling. I tried to talk her up to at least 'Zeke' or 'Zack', but she wasn't really listening."

"And of course, your father was unwilling to force the issue..." Kiya interjected.

"...Well it is tradition here..." Zorlond's weak defense was offered.

"As for your sister here, we decided to name her Darla Jean." Kiya shifted her position, trying to let Anna get a clear view of Darla's tiny face. Darla didn't seem to want to let go of Kiya's breast at the moment, but she managed a somewhat clear angle. "Say 'hi'."

Anna smiled a bit and waved. "Hi." Darla made a little burbling sound around Kiya's nipple. Not exactly a reply, but it was something. Anna continued. "'Darla' doesn't sound like a very sexual name..."

"The locals might prefer to name themselves after body parts and actions, but I'm not going to do that to my own children." Thinking about that briefly, Kiya shrugged. "If she really wants to, she can change it herself, when she grows up."

"What to?" Zorlond asked. "Dickie?"

Kiya looked down suddenly. "I don't think she thinks much of that name..."

Zorlond winced. "I got it." Another mess magiced away.
