Jim stood up, still feeling just a little shaky. At least his broccoli phobia did not extend to other vegetables. Sharon moved to stand at his side, wishing that either she or Jim was armed with a knife, Carret, in particular, wouldn't be as easy to tear apart with bare hands as Lord Brockley had been.

Imagine what you would feel if you stumbled across a dismembered human body, and it will give an idea of the effect on Carret and Beene of seeing Lord Brockley's leaves scattered about the room. They visibly paled - which is to say that Carret became a whiter shade of orange and Beene a more pastel green.
