“Can’t you see? I’m becoming an angel.”
Katherine sat down in a renovated pew. “This…I’m dreaming. I hit my head, or something.”
Candace walked softly, almost floated, over to her friend. “It’s amazing, I know, but you have nothing to fear. This is the way my power wishes to express itself.”
“You’re not scared, Candi? I mean, pretty soon, you won’t be…”
Candace smiled. “Human? Mortal? Yes, I know, and I have to accept that. But in the meantime, we have to prepare. Get some rest; I have work to do.”
Katherine started to protest when Candace waved a hand gently before her face. The girl was peacefully asleep in the pew when the wave ended. Candace draped her in sanctified linens, and gently set her down to sleep.
She watched Katherine for a few moments, then finally approached the altar.
Candace knelt down and prayed, pleased with her understanding as her great white feathered wings unfurled from her shoulders, spreading far and wide around the newborn angel.
Candace spent the next several hours readying the holy water (blessed by merely touching it) and re-sanctifying the church. By nightfall, she felt ready for anything.
