"It turns me into a gargoyle," Lila said, looking a little pale from shock.

"More than just that," Leopold said, "It activated when you're afraid. It's like a protection spell. It gives you the means to defend yourself when you're afraid. It's a very rare gift."

"I don't want it," Lila said, trying to slip the ring off, "I don't want to be a monster."
