“Kris! Lisa!” Emily ran toward the stairs in panic.
Krista and Lisa, who had both been up for several hours, sprinted downstairs to meet her.
“Michelle’s not breathing!”
“Get out of the way!” Krista shouted, her lifeguard training kicking in. She knelt by Michelle as Lisa pulled Emily aside.
Quickly, Krista listened for a heartbeat. When she didn’t find one, she began performing CPR on the girl. She realized mouth-to-mouth was needed to get her breathing; her lifeguard instincts wouldn’t allow her to think of the risk of infection.
She opened Michelle’s mouth, cleared the passageway, and sealed her lips over the werewolf’s.
She continued alternating CPR and mouth-to-mouth for 30 more agonizing seconds, until she finally got a decent pulse going.
The girls breathed a sigh of relief. Krista wiped the sweat from her forehead, wondering what her life-saving gesture would mean to her future as a human.
