Charlotte and the volcano: Gorbash

Charlotte was amazed as how at home she felt inside the volcano. The flowing molten rock and stagnant magma felt like warm blankets and temperate pools. She descended deeper into the earth, and the higher the temperature rose, the more she liked it.

She came to rest atop a white-hot barge of rock, delighting in the feel of magma lapping at her heels. She folded her wings backwards and looked around.

Gorbash? Where are you? She reached out with her mind, like she’d used to do as a human, experimenting with crystals and psychic abilities.

I am all around you, Charlotte. His voice boomed like an eruption; his inflections rolled like rippling lava. I am this volcano.

The volcano? You were once a dragon, right?

Laughter echoed from within the cone. Yes, I was. I had no need of that form anymore.

Charlotte smirked. I rather like it, so far. By the way, what do these runes on my chest mean?

They are ancient markings, signifying your heritage.

The half-dragoness blinked. My…heritage? You mean…I was always a dragon?

A red dragon, yes. It was no accident that you discovered our kind, and activated the runes. Anyone else would have been utterly destroyed by the lava.

Charlotte laughed. Makes sense. I always was a bit of a pyro.

Yes, I have. Can you help us?

The volcano did not stir for a long time. Charlotte was half afraid Gorbash had left her, until he again spoke. I have been alone for millennia, without a kindred spirit to keep me company. I would be greatly honored to have the pleasure of your company, to share this world with you. I will be your home, and I will make you the most powerful dragoness in these lands. If you will agree to this, I will give your companion the answer, and allow her passage back to the Council.

Charlotte considered his offer carefully. Being a dragoness would be wonderful, and Gorbash seemed like a great companion, but could she rule a land of desolation for eternity? Could she give that of herself for Sharon?
