He began to chant words Madison couldn't quite make out.
A long, snaking lick of electricity coiled from his out stretched fingertips and blasted against the force field protecting the Staff of Law. The field held, but the lights in the hallway began to flicker.
Kirk and a security officer both fired simultaneously, but Rick touched a button on his belt, and the phasers were stopped before they reached his body.
"He has a personal shield!" Kirk was yelling. "Maximum setting."
Rick must have visited a universe where furturistic technology exists, Maddiet thought. Because even Kirk looks surprised at that belt of his.
"FIRE!" Kirk roared.
Rick mumbled several words, and another bolt of lightning flew from him hand. This time, the hall lights went out as the force-field protecting the secure room failed. Kirk and the security guard fired, and their blasts seemed to stagger Rick. He cursed, and spat several other words Madison didn't hear. Yellow eyebeams blew two neat holes through the red-shirted security officer's heart. The man collapsed bonelessly as Kirk fired again.
Rick dodged this time, and his yellow eyebeams flashed again. The door to the secure room vanished in a shower of fragments.
Behind the door lay the Staff.
However, in front of the Staff was a demon.
It resembled a floating, slug-like snake, with a long, forked tongue and surrounded by choking, sulfrous smoke.
It seemed to have absolutely no interest in the Staff. It's hateful green eyes were fixed only on Rick.
