Jim came to groggily, and found himself strapped naked into a gurney in what looked to be a hospital operating room. Looking to his right, he saw Sharon strapped into another one right beside him, also without her clothes. As she blinked, starting to come out from under the influence of the anesthesia, a woman in a doctor's outfit came in and looked at them.
"Oh good, you're awake. Now we can start the operation." She pressed a button on one of the instruments beside the operating table, and another gurney rolled in, this one containing a woman who looked enormously pregnant - her belly was larger than she was.
She looked over at the couple and spoke, "Hi, I'm Carol, and in just a little while the three of us are going to get very close. I wish I could be awake to see it." Just then, the doctor placed a mask over Carol's face, and she quickly fell asleep from the anesthetic.
"Wait! What did she mean by that?" Jim asked, confused.
"It's very simple," replied the doctor. "Some of our clients want to be able to form the same maternal bond with their adopted children as they would get if they were pregnant themselves, or they just want to rid their adopted children of any earlier influences and start from scratch. We've developed a way to do this, but to be sure that it'll work on any ages, we needed some adult test subjects. You both fit Ms. Forsyth's specifications for children quite well, and the existing emotional bond between the two of you should make things easier." As she said this, the doctor opened a sealed container next to Jim and Sharon, removing two lumps of tissue with what looked like umbilical cords from the container.
"You're going to do what?!" Sharon cried, shocked.
The doctor walked next to Sharon, pulling a strange cylindrical object out of her pocket. Pressing it against Sharon's navel, she continued, "It's really a simple proceedure, first I attach the artificial placenta - like this." The doctor removed the cylinder, leaving a hole where scar tissue had filled Sharon's belly button. She then pressed the end of the cord from one of the lumps of tissue against the hole, and Jim and Sharon watched in horror as the cord fused to her skin. As she walked over to Jim to repeat the process, the doctor spoke again. "After that, I open Carol up, implant the placentas, then put the two of you inside and seal her up again. The hormones in the placentas and the treatments she's been recieving should do the rest." She finished connecting the cord to Jim, then walked over to Carol, making a neat incision down her massive belly and then stretched the sides of the cut to fit a strange oval-shaped frame hanging above Carol.
"You can't just make us disappear! People will come looking for us!" Jim said desperately.
The doctor smiled as she finished fastening the two placentas into a frame that dropped from the ceiling. As it lifted back up she spoke, "Of course we can. I guarantee that no one will care enough to go looking - not once we 'persuade' them to stop."
"Ha! Candace and Rick are our friends - they'll come looking for us no matter what you do!" Sharon said confidently.
"Candace Simmons and Richard Brockton? I don't think that they'll be helping you anytime soon. Candace works for us, and she should have finished testing the vaginal entry aspect of this project on Rick an hour ago. I expect that she'll report in later this afternoon."
As the doctor spoke, Jim and Sharon felt a tingle sweep through their bodies, and saw the frams that the placentas had been fastened to emerge from Carol's body, empty. The doctor came over to them with another syringe. "Good, now I can shut you up." Before either of them could do anything, she had injected Jim and Shaorn with something and began undoing their restraints. Sharon tried to leap up, but found that she couldn't move! She tried to cry out, but couldn't draw breath either. Her facial muscles worked, but nothing else as the doctor strapped her into a harness lowered from above. "Don't worry - the paralysis will wear off in an hour. By then, Carol's body will have healed enough to keep you from escaping. I'll be here watching for the next few hours just in case, though."
As he was being strapped into a harness, Jim watched Sharon's harness move over Carol's belly. Just before it dropped into her, he could see a look of terror on Sharon's face. The harness emerged empty as he felt himself rise. Soon, he too was lowered into the warm liquid that filled Carol's womb. Then, he saw the doctor smile down at them as she folded the flaps of Carol's skin back down and the light disappeared as she sealed the incision.
