Discworld: You Can't Disbelieve Ponder Stibbons
Unending BE - episode 146318
Commander Vimes - like most of the people of Ankh-Morpork - did not trust
wizards. And the disappearance of an entire city block - something that could only
have been accomplished by very powerful magic - hardly inclined him to trust them more.
However nobody could distrust Ponder Stibbons. He might be extremely intelligent, but
one could see at a glance that in spite of his intelligence he was totally incapable
of any form of deceit.
So Vimes was willing to accept Stibbons' description of events as being the truth.
"We must assume that whoever was responsible for the disappearance of the city block was
also behind the attack on the university," he said. "Could they have attacked
the university in order to nullify any magical defence of the rest of the city that
the wizards might have been able to put up? In that case we can expect
further attacks. Or was the university their main target, and the city
block was just unlucky enough to be sufficiently close to get taken out as well?
In that case, there probably won't be any more attacks."
- "I think the university was the main target," Stibbons said. "You see..."
- "I think the city is the main target," Stibbons said. "You see..."
- *"You're assuming that it was deliberate," Stibbons said. "But I wonder if it could have been a side-effect of Jim's experience with the spellbook."
- Stibbons said something else.
- Someone else said something.
