DJ Woohoo was shaking her head as if to clear it. "Sorry," she said, "just a bad case of Fitzgeralditis. Man it's wrenching when you're channeling one Author and then your mind gets jerked in a completely different direction by another..."
"Huh? What's that have to do with the numbers?"
DJ sighed. "I'll explain. Deja Voodoo instituted a numbering system that made sense to him, but it didn't to FCF, so he changed it. FCF's system didn't made sense to DVd, so he changed it back and explained FCF's aberation as a bad dream, but FCF still didn't get it, so--"
"Back again. I get it. And that's why we went off on a tangent last ep and why Mr. Hilbert suddenly started sticking his head out of the phone. I thought that was weird..."
"And the ridiculous thing about it is there's no need for confusion in the first place. The upper levels aren't part of the Hotel. There's virtually no connection between them and it, aside from a few private elevators (and Hilbert's) office, and most of the guests at the Hotel don't even know there is anything above the Hotel!"
"Uh, DJ? You're ranting."
"And the Hotel and all its floors are on the Main Level of the Backstage anyway -- the Upper Levels are levels, not additional floors of the Hotel! Sheesh! What's to get confused about? The Hotel's floors are all 'Main Level, Floors 1-10' and the Upper Levels are 'Level 2,' 'Level 3,' and so on! Is this ridiculous, or what?"
"It sure is," said Fruitbat, neutrally. A little too neutrally, because something in her voice maide DJ look up.
"You're humoring me, aren't you?" she accused.
"You are ranting," Fruitbat pointed out. "But I figured I probably shouldn't get in the way."
DJ smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I don't know what came over me. No, actually I do know. Deja Voodoo. That on top of a dose of Fitzgerald, and it's a wonder I'm not a stark, raving lunatic. Is this a dumb issue, or what?"
"Yes," said Fruitbat, declining to choose between those options.
"Still, it ought to be resolved."
"Why? Why not let FCF call the upper levels what he wants and DVd call them what he wants, and if other Authors and Readers get confused refer them to those guys?"
"It's not that simple. Adama will get confused, too. He's the guy who's gotta try to make sense out of all this."
Fruitbat sighed. "Okay, how's this, then? Just get Hilbert to double-number everything. You know, 'floor 11/level 2,' 'suite 2000/001,' that sort of thing."
"It sucks," said DJ.
