Backstage: the Russells' get a year off, thanks to the jiggling amazons...

Unending BE - episode 133281

For the next year (the author figured it would be prudent to be generous) the Russells had no troubles (or at least, very few). There were almost no drop-ins, aside from a few from the family who were actually invited. The exceptions were quickly redirected in the direction of the Hotel. Nor did any Authors drop by, because Deja Voodoo was writing the episode, which meant none could write themselves Backstage until he was done. Which was just as well, seeing that Ye Olde Wizzard's Bar and Grille, the officially designated Author hangout, was not yet open for business. Sendula and Credensa discovered the downside of being pregnant as well as the upside -- for one thing, as they got more and more pear-shaped, they had disturbing flashbacks to their world of origin and its Killer Avocados. (Not that avocados look like pears, you understand, but they look considerably more like pears than they do like people. And the fact that Killer Avocados are ambulatory and thus have legs added a most disquieting verisimilitude to the comparison.) On the other hand, it was fun ordering Sid out to the AddVenture at large to bring back strange flavors of ice cream from Ben & Jerry's...

Sid didn't mind. In spite of such imposition, he found he had a lot of free time on his hands too, which he utilized to improve the family arsenal and defenses, refine the protocol for dealing with drop-ins, and familiarize himself better with the huge and ever-growing universe of the frontstage AddVenture. He also kept a wary eye out for the arrival of the Old Wizard whose coming had been predicted by Deja Voodoo's Guide to the Backstage. So far there was no indication of when that worthy might show up.

At last the great day came. And despite certain amazonian nightmares about possibly giving birth to little avocados who might eat their way out of their mothers' wombs into the light of day...

everything went normally. Sendula gave birth to a beautiful little baby girl, whom she named Cressida Sendula Russell, and Credensa likewise brought forth another baby girl, bright as a button, pretty as a picture, and loud as a foghorn, who was blessed with the appellation of Sensida Credensa Russell. The two mothers had considered giving their new daughters a long string of names each, after the fashion of their culture, but since that culture was essentially dead each opted for the compromise of combining her own name with her husband's for the first name, honoring her sister for the second, and taking her husband's surname for the third, after the odd but cute fashion of his culture.

So that was that. They had three months' grace after the births to be full-time mothers, following which poor Mirage had to do triple duty as wetnurse, as little Alvin was still far from weaned, and showed no sign of being ready to be. Fortunately, a magical creature such as herself had options denied ordinary mortals. The situation was quickly resolved by her growing a third breast.

After that it was back to work for everyone...

  1. *Didn't you hear me? It was back to work! Characters dropping in, Authors dropping in, maybe even the Old Wizard dropping in at last. You know -- work!
