"Name's Sid. Sidney James Russell, if you want to be formal. Everyone who doesn't fit into the AddVenture's current schemes seems to end up here at some time or other. Figured it was only a matter of time before the 'toons started showing up."
"And where is 'here'?"
"Backstage at the BEA. Holding cell for characters between assignments. Like me. You too, for that matter."
"I don't understand."
"It's like this. We're characters in a computer-game played by horny geeks as a pale substitute for true sexual gratification. That's why so many undignified things keep happening to us. Someone decided to put you on the shelf for a while. So here you are."
"I still don't understand. What's my purpose in this 'game'>"
"Sexual plaything. Pretty popular one, too. People try to start 'D-Girl' threads all the time, but you're the only 'D-Girl' they really seem to want to play with much. Something about the harem outfit and the magical mileau, no doubt."
"Oh." Jasmine considered the implications. "And you? What are you here for?"
"Oh, my purpose seems to mainly be to highlight the meta-nature of the story, as if any of the players would have any difficulty grasping the point. I provide logical reasons for 'reality' being the way it is in the context of the story itself, which of course isn't like reality in the actual real world from which the story is played. Supposedly I built a reality-changing machine called the MarkT forty years ago, and it went haywire, so now I'm trying to get to the thing and fix it in various reality lines. In reality, MarkT is the guy who moderates the AddVenture, of course, and fixing the machine wouldn't change anything about 'reality.' But it makes a good story. Whoops, looks like your number is up. I think you're about to be shot back into the story!"
"But--" Jasmine started. A number appeared. An episode number.
"Bye bye," said Uncle Sid, waving.
