Sandra Becomes the Two of Hearts

As soon as Sandra got inside the shop, she realised that this was very different from any other card shop she had ever been in. Standing motionless were many soldiers. Each wore, in addition to a regular uniform, two giant playing cards joined together by straps resting on his shoulders, one card hanging in front of him and one behind him.

At the shop-counter, a woman who - judging by the crown that she wore on her head - must be the Queen of Hearts was deep in discussion with the shopkeeper. Thus they did not notice Sandra, which she was glad of as her underwear had by now totally vanished. Lifting up the pair of cards that the nearest soldier - the Two of Hearts - had been wearing, she attired herself in them. Then she began to walk out of the shop, but was brought up short by the Queen of Heart's shout: "Hey, you! Where do you think you are going? I've just hired you and all the other soldiers in the shop. Since I beheaded that last batch, the Palace Guard has been very under strength."

  1. Sandra attempted to protest that she was not a soldier.
  2. Seeing the Queen's angry expression, Sandra remained silent.
  3. Sandra ran for it.
