There was something hypnotic about the soft voices. Sharon put her hands over her ears, but that did not help her, because she was hearing them within her mind rather than via her ears (for the statues could not speak in the conventional way). "Come, Sharon. Join us in never-ending ecstasy," the siren voices said.

  1. With an enormous effort, she broke the spell and retraced her steps, leaving the fountain and statues behind.
  2. *She slowly moved towards the fountain.
  3. She felt a pulse of pain from her collar, and realised that she was required to take her place in the circle of statues.
