mention any number of other Middle Eastern rulers over the centuries who have done
the same. So I'd
say this sort of thing was very traditional, wouldn't you?" The man looked rather at a loss
for a moment, but then he rallied. "But that's not conservative values," he
objected. "You don't think so? I don't think the average Middle Eastern potentate
ever tended to be much of a radical reformer. I think that maintaining a harem was
quite compatible with conservatism. After all, we still say of someone who has
extreme conservative views that they are 'somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan'."
"But they weren't Americans," said the man rather desperately. Jim smiled.
"Is that the best you can do?" "You're obviously too sunk in sin for any hope of
salvation," said the man, realising that he wasn't getting anywhere. "Good Day to you.
Are you coming, Carol?" Carol said:
