Fortunately this particular tribe didn't seem to go in for the cutting off of one breast to assist with their archery. Jim thought that would have been rather yucky. All the women carried swords and shields or bows, but apart from collars similar to Sharon's round their necks they were naked.

Then one of the women advanced slightly ahead of the others, carrying a flag of truce, and both sides stopped firing. "Free our queen," she called. "Otherwise we shall raze your castle to the ground." "Raise it to the ground?" asked Jim, confused. "Did you think it was underground?" "R-A-Z-E," the woman spelt out. "You have one hour. Then we return to the attack."

Jim called down to Sharon in the courtyard below and behind him. "What should I do? If I take off the ring, with any luck we will be transported away, but then it looks as though there would be a bloody battle, since I can't see that army accepting that you were no longer here." Sharon replied:

  1. "It's not our problem. Take off the ring."
  2. "I must go and be their queen, and leave you, the man I love. 'It is a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done.'"
  3. "If I go to be their queen, I wonder if they'd accept you as prince consort?"
