The Truth WILL Set You Free!
Unending BE - episode 30156
"Well!" exclaimed Remington, looking at the readings from the polygraph-esque machine--it could actually also monitor her very brain patterns in addition to her body temperature, pulse, etc.--"it seems that you are indeed telling the truth. I don't know how, but it seems that you've actually managed to break off from the Legion without doing it in a body bag. Care to let us in on your little secret?" He smiled as he unhooked Julie-Su from the chair.
"No," she snapped, tossing her long pink dreadlocks out of her face and rubbing her wrists and ankles, where the rather too-tight bands of the machine had cut into her slightly. She managed to give the Constable a look that was imperious and haughty even though she had to look UP her nose at him somewhat, not down. "I would NOT care to let you in on that. And now, if you'll excuse me, I have a life to get back to." With a toss of her head, she started to walk out the door. Sharon, who had always been free to go anyway, stood up to follow her.
"Just one things, ma'am." came Remington's voice from behind them. "We've still got our eye on you. Just remember that. You're being let off with nothing but a warning THIS time...next time you might not be so lucky."
Back stiff and her head held high, Julie-Su stalked out the door without answering him.
"So, where do we go now?" Sharon asked Julie as they roamed through the city. "I've never been here before, so I have no idea where anything is..."
Julie-Su pursed her lips. "Well, I know of a couple of places that need help right now. I could get you a job at one of them and then stick around for a while to make sure you're doing all ri--"
She cut off as a little kid on the sidewalk started shrieking loudly.
"MOOMMMEEEEYYYY!!!" screamed the little kid, pointing at Julie-Su. "It's an evil robot-person, mommy!! It's a MONSTER! Don't let the monster get me, Mommy!!" He burst into tears.
As Julie-Su watched in mortified astonishment, the child's mother came out onto the sidewalk from the door of their house and slowly pulled the kid inside, glaring daggers at Julie the entire time. The pink cyborg echidna sighed heavily.
"It's these implants," she groaned. "I can't get rid of them without killing myself; the Legion made good and SURE of that. And in this society, with its extreme phobia about technology taking over people...truth is, I sort of represent a nightmare or dark fairy-tale monster image...that kid was only one of many...I ALWAYS get treated like that." She sat down on the curb of the sidewalk, depressed.
Sharon put her arm around the furry girl's shoulder--the one that WAS still furry, anyway--even though she knew that her cold scaly hand would be little comfort. She was a bit disconcerted--Julie-Su had gone from tough and dangerous and hard-nosed to vulnerable and sad within seconds. Evidently there were more dimensions to her personality than had been readily apparent. "Isn't there some way you can convince people otherwise? That you really ARE a good person?"
"YEAH!" cried Julie, standing up suddenly. "Maybe if I do something REALLY big and REALLY nice for the whole city, they'll accept me! The only problem is....what?"
She stroked her chin thoughtfully. "But I'll have to think of that later--right now, the important thing is getting you a job and a place to stay. Come on."
- *Sharon decides that she can look for a job later; right now she'd much rather find out what wild scheme Julie-Su has in mind.
- *Sharon decides that maybe it is best to get a job and a place to live first; if she's gonna be here a while she's going to need some security.
- *SOMETHING ELSE, duh!
