Jim wondered if he should put the ring back on, but he was afraid of dropping and losing it. Besides, before he could put it on he would have to remove his leather glove. It seemed more sensible to stop the bike first. He was just about to slow down, when a cry of "Look!" from Sharon made him take in the scenery for the first time. They were riding through desert - maybe Nevada or Arizona. About a quarter of a mile ahead of them:

  1. Hideous mutants were manning (or maybe "monstering" would be more apt) a roadblock.
  2. *Was a ruined and blackened city.
  3. The desert sand was fused into oddly glowing quartz.
  4. Something else.
