Here They Come to Save the Day...But Who ARE They?

Unending BE - episode 29183

A gigantic, lumbering stone statue in a shape reminiscent of, but not exactly the same as, the Sphinx on Earth was clunking across the floor straight towards them. It had spikes sticking out of its "stomach" and the front of its paws. Fortunately, our four heroes were on a ledge high up on the wall, above the thing and in the shadows, so they were in no IMMEDIATE danger...still, they would have a hard time getting out of here...
And then, Sharon spied something unusual down on the floor, which was quite a ways down. A strange, spiky blue figure and a small orange fox cub with....TWO TAILS?! They were both leaping towards the Sphinx frantically, evidently attacking it somehow by slamming into it with their bodies.
"Who are THEY?" wondered Mighty.
"I don't know," replied Charmy, "I've never seen them before. They're a hedgehog and a fox; I knew a few back when I still lived on Mobius, before I moved up here to the Island, but I don't remember any as strange-looking as THEM."
"He's somehow hurting the statue by smacking into it with the spikes on his back," observed Sharon of the odd blue hedgehog. "But HOW?"
"Never mind that, let's just keep quiet and hope he can get rid of the Sphinx for us!" shushed Mighty. The three conscious animals shut up. Espio, of course, said nothing.
And then the blue hedgehog SMACKED into the head of the Sphinx--and the stone flew apart momentarily, to reveal a control panel--the statue was actually a robot!--with a round, fat Human with a HUGE red mustache inside! The three animals on the ledge looked at each other uneasily. Humans--or Overlanders, as the Mobians tended to call them--were NEVER very good news.
However, this particular human seemed to be having rather a bit of trouble with the hedgehog and fox, as the instant the control panel was exposed, the little fox SMACKED into the shield of the control panel, almost breaking it. The Sphinx then managed to move forwards again another step but right afterwards, the hedgehog and fox SMACKED it again, and after eight hits, the control cockpit's shield was broken and the fat Human peeled out of the broken Sphinx robot and RAN FOR HIS LIFE! Running at an unbelieveable speed behind him, the hedgehog took off in chase with his fox buddy using his two tails like helicopter blades to FLY--
--and then, with a bloodcurdling scream, they both disappeared down a trap door!
Cautiously, using the ring-tether, the two bees lifted Espio and Mighty to the floor. Mighty walked over to inspect the wreckage of the broken Sphinx. "This is pretty advanced stuff, all right," he said thoughtfully. "The ability to make an ancient statue controllable by modern robotic techniques is NOT something to sneeze at. Knuckles should hear about this."
"What about the hedgehog and fox?" asked Sharon.
Mighty shrugged. "Ah, they're intruders, and should not have even been here on the Island in the first place. That trapdoor leads into the Lava Reef Zone--if IT doesn't get them, then Knuckles will. Come on. Let's get Espio to the Hidden Palace and patch him up."
"But shouldn't SOMEONE go see if the fox and hedgehog are all right?" insisted Sharon. "After all, they DID help us out, in a way."
"FINE," Mighty sighed. "You want to split up, then you and Charmy can go explore the Lava Reef while I carry Espio--he's way PAST light enough. But it's quite a distance to the Palace, and I still think we'd be safer in this pyramid if we stayed together."
Sharon considered.
