It's a giant gold hoop. "Wow, a ring-portal!" said Charmy. "I didn't know there were any of those here! Let's step into it and see where it leads!"
"Okay," said Sharon. Anything was better than just standing around here in the dark. So they linked hands, and jumped.
Unfortunately, they didn't QUITE jump through at the same time--Sharon's foot went in a split-second before Charmy's did. Therefore, as always happens with this kind of portal, only the first person--Sharon--went through, while the second was left stranded as the portal disappeared!
