The nerd used the mechanical man's arms to put Sharon down on the floor, and then climbed down himself. "This way," he said, then caught himself and said "Ah!", as he realised that for Sharon this was easier said than done. "I guess it will be simpler if I get Jim to join us," he said. He walked over to an intercom on the wall, flipped a switch and spoke: "I've got her Jim. Could you join us?" Sharon heard Jim's voice, albeit a bit distorted over the intercom. "Sure, I'll be right there."
A minute or so later, one of the doors opened and Jim entered. After he and Sharon had hugged, he explained about the alternate reality where they wanted to send Sharon. It appeared that this alt was in great trouble. Russian scientists had discovered a life-prolonging drug back in the 1940s, with the result that Stalin was still alive and still the ruler of Russia. America had retreated into isolationism in recent decades. War had recently broken out between the European Union and Russia as a result of Russian aggression. Russia had the upper hand thanks to their nuclear submarine. (This alt was comparatively backward as far as the understanding of nuclear physics was concerned, so that Russia only had the one nuclear submarine and the EU had no nuclear weapons at all.)
