The eighteen-year-old female named 'Julie' received Personal Reality Modification Device (PRMD) from a traveling salesman while hitch-hiking across country. The PRMD had looked identical to the rest of the salesman's stock of sunglasses, among which they had been hidden by a team of alien researchers. Because the salesman was unaware of his part in the experiment, he had no idea why Julie suffered a blinding headache moments after placing the pair over her eyes.
The headache caused by the PRMD, as they entered the initial activation phase, only lasted a few minutes, after which it disappeared. So had the PRMD since it had morphed through Julie's temple and became part of her brain. The alien designers had known of the initial discomfort, but had correctly judged it to be harmless. Unfortunately, the process had been intense enough to cause Julie to faint.
