As the babbling group sped away, Ricki looked after them. “Yep, I think I remember that part. That was while we were doing our ‘Contest’. Maybe we haven’t changed history after all.”
They opened the locker room door and cautiously entered. Between two lockers they saw what looked like their identical twins, lying on the floor asleep. The wand was held loosely in the other Rick’s hand.
“Now what?” Ricki asked. “Do we wake them up? Or should we just grab the wand and run?”
“Let’s wait a few minutes. The last thing I remember was feeling sleepy. So something must be about to happen that sends us back in time. I’d like to find out just what that is.”
“Maybe something that you and I do right now causes our other selves to go back in time. You know, like a ‘predestination paradox’.”
Jamie looked at her in disgust. “You’ve been watching too much Star Trek.”
Just then a hole opened in the middle of the air, its bottom edge resting on the floor. The two girls gasped at what happened next.
“Rats??“ gasped Ricki. “No wait -- are those weasels?”
“I think those look like ferrets, actually. But what the hell are they doing?”
They watched the swarm of ferrets grab their other selves and push them into the hole. Ricki’s sharp eyes noticed the wand roll away under a bench.
