Donna Drake Double Trouble!
Unending BE - episode 20153
Donna picked up the phone on the second ring. "Hello? Hello?" She heard nothing.
Then all of a sudden, the strangest, most disturbing sensations washed over her. She dropped the phone, unknowing, as horrific and mysterious visions invaded her mind. They were both images of death and destruction--but two different ways--fire, and water--and one seemed to be way in the past, the other in the present--but the two sets of images were intermingled and kept alternating. First she saw visions of what looked to be an ancient Aztec temple deep in the jungle--only the people inhabiting it were anthropomorphic ANIMALS of some kind!--running, screaming, and dying in horrible agonies, as their city was burned to the ground by some unseen enemy. Especially disturbing was the scene-let of a small, young girl of their kind, desperately trying to get them to stop whatever they were doing--but she was trampled underneath by their feet and crushed. The scene of destruction had the feeling of inevitibility; as if it had happened many times before and would always happen again, over and over and over, no matter how hard anyone tried to stop it.
Then she saw an image of modern destruction: the downtown area being destroyed by water--LIVING water? She couldn't believe her eyes. The water running through the sewers suddenly got a mind of its own and THRUST upwards into the sky in many destructive guysers; the streets themselves buckled, cracked, and finally split all the way open under the pressure. Trees were uprooted. Cars were flung sideways and upside-down; people tried frantically to get away, running and screaming just as the animal-people in the past (?) had. Then the strangest thing of all happened--the water surged upwards through the city's largest skyscraper as if it was a thinking, living thing, with single-minded purpose--violently EXPLODED all the windows of the building out at once in a great shower of glass, and then--and then--
--the water TOOK SHAPE--it became some kind of huge dragon! Shifting, blobby, fluid, but still able to retain--and change--its shape. The dragon looked over its scene of destruction, and gave a great thundering roar.
The scene ended on a chilling close-up of the water-creature's evil, gleaming, liquid yellow eye.
Then the girl from the temple vision appeared all by herself, floating ghostlike above the wrecked and sodden ruins of the city. She said directly into Donna's mind:"Chaos came long ago...Chaos is coming again. If you do not find the Seven to control the One, all is lost. Your people will become like ours...nothing but faded memories...unless you help us. YOU are our only hope, Donna Drake."

Donna came awake again with a start, and before she knew what she was doing, she was out the door to look at the city. It was okay, everyone was going about their business as usual. PHEW, she thought to herself. That vision was INTENSE! What the heck? I don't have an imagination like THAT! And since when do spirits or ghosts or whatever start sending telepathic visions by way of the PHONE?
She put the reciever back on the hook and went for a walk downtown to think while she considered what she had just seen. It calmed her down somehow to see it all nicely normal and unbroken; that vision had been so REAL; she had truly felt as if her hometown really was destroyed for a moment there. She knew she wasn't actually psychic; therefore, what she had just seen must have been sent to her. By WHOM, _why_, and why they wanted HER to help out were all good questions, but for now the most important consideration was this--if the vision really WAS a future that would soon come to pass unless she did something, then where could she find the Seven that controlled the One? And what WERE they, anyway?!
Don't be stupid, Donna she chided herself good-naturedly. It's just a product of your boredom and the fact that you drank a whole bottle of whiskey at Oklahoma Smith's party last night. Get some rest and forget about it.
Yet she could not push away those images...the dying little girl...the flames...the surging, breaking, exploding water...and that EYE boring directly into her very soul...
- She decides to look up legends about "The Seven that control the One" in her extensive private library.
- She decides to go ask for Oklahoma Smith's advice on this, much as she hates to. She may need his help, if this is as big as it seems to be...
- She remembers about those legends in South America that she was going to go check out, and wonders if this might not somehow be related.
- She does SOMETHING ELSE entirely.
