The Truth Comes Out

Unending BE - episode 3018

"Beautiful country, isn't it?" Deanna started.
"Yes, quite," Jim answered, lost in his own thought.
"What troubles you, Sir Knight?" Cabron asked, sensing his worry.
"Nothing," Jim said shortly.
"Sir Knight, you may be able to lie to yourself, but you cannot lie to me. For 3000 years I have seen people, I think I know how to tell when someone is troubled. What troubles you?"
"I don't know," Jim said finally, haltingly, after a long pause.
"Hey, Jim, it's OK, we're on a quest to save the world together," Deanna said, "I think we can trust each other. What's wrong?"
After another long pause, Jim finally composed himself and said, "This isn't my world."
"Not your world?" Cabron interjected. "How do you mean, Sir Knight?"
"I'm not a knight, either. I don't belong in this world, and I'm not a knight. I'm Jim. Plain-ass Jim from Chicago, Illinois. I wake up yesterday morning in this world, and now I'm Sir Jim the Saviour of the World, going to defeat Dekalamon. It's a lie. I can't even shoot a deer. How do I kill a wizard? I half expected to wake up back in my bed at home when we spent the night at your castle, but no. I'm on a quest to save the world. And I'm going to die."
Deanna looked at him, not understanding a word he said, but feeling pity for his plight, whatever he was talking about. Cabron, however, was staring at Jim with wide eyes, "You are correct, Lord Jim. You are not a Knight. You are an Avatar. The gods have sent you to help us."
"What are you talking about, Count?" Jim asked.
"Oh, won't Dekalamon be surprised? The stench of his evil has reached to the heavens, and the gods have come to put an end to him. I do hope Lord Abbadon consented to thier action. What a delight if the Lord of the Dead refused to accept Dekalamon! T'would be a shame indeed if Dekalamon were not allowed to enter even the lowest pits of Hell, but were left for eternity in the gray plains of nothingness!" Cabron's eyes were smiling wider than his face.
"Now wait a minute you don't think..." Jim began.
"Lord Jim..." Deanna interrupted him.
"Don't call me that, it isn't true, I say."
"It must be true," Cabron interrupted him this time. "I knew Dekalamon couldn't hold sway over us forever."
"Gentlemen," Deanna stopped them, "we're here."
The three of them looked up to gaze at the Imperial Palace. Every building in the complex was sheathed in marble. Every column, every statue, marble. Streets paved with cut cobblestones. Jim and Deanna had never known such opulence, and Cabron, though he marked the Empire's rise to power, had never been to the capitol city. He was just a ghost, after all, a legend.
"So beautiful," Deanna managed to say.
"So many options," Jim observed. "Where to we start?"
"Well, we are here to obtain help. We can defeat Dekalamon ourselves, for the gods are with us." Jim gave Cabron a disbelieving look at that statement. "However, the Avatar doesn't believe it yet, and so will fail if tried. So we seek aid and confederates. I imagine we could go to the warriors hall and hire men of mettle to aid us. We could go to the wizards guild and hire the powers of wisdom and age. We could even go directly to the Emperor, see about getting military support. The possibilities are almost literally endless."
Jim and Deanna thought about the possibilities, then the three decided..."Beautiful country, isn't it?" Deanna started.

  1. Go to the Hall of Warriors
  2. *Go to the Wizards Pavillion
  3. *Go to the Imperial Palace
  4. *Look for help elsewhere in the city
  5. Leave the city altogether and face Dekalamon alone
