Jim sighed and then slowly began paging through his little black book again to find Sharon's cell number. Jim's stomach rumbled with hunger, as he had not yet eaten since getting up. Incredible how long it could take to make one simple phone call!
He finally found his girlfriend's number and punched it in, this time taking care not to accidentally dial Shannon's.
The phone rang and rang. Jim was about to give up and go get a doughnut to soothe his hunger pangs, when abruptly, the ringing stopped and Jim heard a strange scratching noise at the other end of the line. It sounded as though the phone were being dragged along the floor or perhaps rubbed against some kind of rough surface.
"Hello? Sharon?" Jim asked tentatively.
"Jim!" came the response, "Jim!" It was Sharon, but her voice held a note that made Jim's heart stand still: she sounded frantic, on the verge of panic!
"Jim! Help me! I'm..." Sharon's voice was abruptly muffled, as though by a big soft obstruction being placed over her mouth.
"Sharon! Talk to me!" Jim pleaded.
The phone went silent for a moment and then in the background, Jim heard a strange, almost animalistic sound: "Oooga! Oooga!" Abruptly, the phone went dead.
