New Story: The Living Costume

Annie was a spellcaster. An amateur, still in training, but a spellcaster regardless. She loved the idea of being able to use magic to make her life (and occasionally the lives of others) a little easier.

The one thing that she enjoyed as much as her magic was cosplay. Cosplay, for those unaware, was the practice of attending anime conventions dressed in costumes based upon beloved characters. It was a time-consuming process; making costumes, preparing wigs, getting her makeup just right. But Annie enjoyed every second of it.

Right now, however, her cosplaying was the furthest thing from her mind. She'd spent several hours practicing a spell which would allow for her to animate an inanimate object - in simple terms, make a nonliving thing move and follow her commands. Unfortunately, it wasn't going so well.

The familiar green glow enveloped her hands, and she cried out, "Animatus!"

Her intended target, a footstool, remained motionless.

"Animatus! Animatus! ANIMATUS!"

Annie groaned, then retrieved her glasses. "Guess I'll try again later." She left her bedroom, hoping that a little TV would help to calm her nerves.

Now, the reason that Annie wore glasses was because she had an unusual vision problem. For some odd reason, her eyesight was exactly two degrees off from that of others'. She tended to not wear her glasses while practicing her magic, as she had a habit of wildly gesturing whenever a difficult spell was performed. Normally, this wasn't a problem.

Normally.

This time, however, it was a great problem. Because of her vision problem, her magic had misfired; instead of hitting her intended target, it hit a costume she'd been working on...
