Welcome To
The Unending BE Addventure!
An endless and multi-branched Continuous Story, based upon
the original Addventure
game, but set up just for us here at the BEA! It's been going since 1998,
and is still one of the biggest and most frequently updated adult-oriented
interactive fiction sites around.

What's New at the BEA Addventure
01 January 2006
- Episode options which are backlinks will now have a '>' to the left of the link text. Let us know if the chosen character presents a problem in some browsers.
April 7, 2002
- Moved onto the new stable server at BEA!
March 28, 2000
- Fixed a problem which had cropped up a few days back which
prevented new episodes from being added. Apparently, a race
condition had stomped on the episode-creator fields.
While this may happen again someday, it should only happen about once
every two or three years -- and I know what to look for now.
October 21, 1999
- Addventure has moved! We're on a faster, bigger server
and Addventure should be running much faster now!
Thanks to the BEA Members, whose financial support made
this possible.
October 12, 1999
- Treeview has been rewritten. With much help from Steve B.,
it is now a much smaller and faster little CGI. We should
still try to use it sparingly, but it should
no longer crash the BEA. Thanks to everyone who helped out on
our "fix treeview" crusade!
October 1, 1999
- Recent Episodes and Treeview taken offline. They were
hogging so much CPU time and memory that repeated uses
of them caused BEA to continually *crash*. Until they
can be rewritten, they are unavailable.
News flash: I had a semi-brilliant brainstorm and spent
a few hours tonight completely rewriting the Recent Episodes
function. Now, it runs as a once-a-day background cron
job (around midnight) which sucks up about 20-30 seconds
of realtime, but no more. This new routine generates
static HTML pages which represent the recent episodes.
Now the web server can hand them back with no extra effort
at all (no spawning a CGI, etc). This solves the problem
with Recent Episodes, by and large, although it means the
"Recent" part is a little off now - it will only show
episodes that were recent at midnight the night before,
not recent when you look at the web page.
Obviously, this strategy won't work with a treeview, though.
Still pondering that one.
- Some episode corruption is still happening (but not much).
I'll slowly be quashing the remaining unextendable episodes
as I get a chance. Let me know which ones you find.
August 6, 1999
- Some episode corruption is still happening (but not much).
It makes episodes unextendable. Don't have a fix yet.
Since the corruption has only affected the MelloVerse, and
since that universe is temporarily offlimits anyway,
no real harm done.
- Added the new Addventure
Chain View feature.
July 31, 1999
- Found problem that was corrupting episodes and making them
unextendable (wrong path was written out when an episode author
"cancelled" their attempt to author an episode). Fixed problem
and all broken episodes as well.
- Added new minor feature: when shown the text of the previous episode
during authoring, now also show the choice that was taken, so
the author knows what option they're following.
April 24, 1999
- Rebuilt all the executables and rewrote parts of the code
to compensate for the new version of Apache and OS that was installed.
Edited all non-written episode entry pages to reflect the
new directory structure instituted after the server upgrade.
January 30, 1999
- Rewrote a major part of the file-placement code so that not all
files go into the same directory; I suspect we were taxing poor
Linux to its utmost with over 30,000 files in a single directory.
Jeepers, this has turned out to be popular!
- Added the ability to see the text you just wrote, in HTML
style, when you see the Options page. This will allow you to see
if you've typed it right, etc.
December 20, 1998
- Added the "go directly to an episode" feature to the
Stats & Utilities
part of the Introduction Page.
July 24, 1998
July 10, 1998
- Made it so that the previous episode's text shows up when you're
writing a new episode (by request). This change actually
went in around July 8 or so.
- Added the new Tree View feature to the main Intro Page.
- Added the new Recently Completed Episodes feature.
