somebody posted a pic in the gallery that illustrated using the Auto button in the Image>Adjust>Curves dialog to do a quick color correction of a poor image. It works pretty well with most images. Image>Adjust>Auto Levels has the same effect and saves you a few steps.

This can be accomplished with more control by using the Image>Adjust>Levels Dialogue box.
