Philip Laskey's Hair Painting Tutorial
This is the long-awaited Hair Tutorial by PL. It applies only to Painter 4 to 6, not Photoshop or any other paint program that I know about, and a pressure-sensitive tablet is also essential! The main image is not complete at time of writing, but will be posted soon after this message (steady boys).

Hair a; start by making a lasso selection, sharply defining the outline of the head and where the bunchies start, also where the hair goes behind other objects. "Loop" widely round areas that have no sharp definition like the fringe. Select a darker version of the colour you intend to use for the hair and paint it in, using Painter's "coarse hairs" brush in this case. Keep a light touch on the fringe.

Hair b; select a lighter shade, making sure you keep the colour saturation to avoid "greying out". This girl is too young to go grey! Paint in higher areas, starting to model out the shape of the hair (remember there is a head under it) and the curl of her bunchies.

Hair c; a still lighter shade in an ever decreasing highlight. It's looking like hair now. Note how the highlights are forming the shape of the hair.

Hair d; Undo the selection, and select a tool such as "scratchboard tool" and start adding loose hair and locks of hair, starting with the dark shade again. Like most paint programs, Painter enables you to make your own custom colour palettes so you can go back to the starting colour easily. Make a lighter shade again and bring out areas like the fringe, sidelocks and the ends of her bunchies.

Hair e; Finished, apart from a few little touches, which will be done after the bows and headband are painted. The highlights have been lightly touched-in with white and the "coarse hairs" brush to soften them. Sweet, old fashioned and ready to serve you!

Phil
